Jerry Burgess, the Botetourt County Administrator, sent The Botetourt View this statement in response to today's state Supreme Court ruling in favor of The Glebe's non-profit tax status:

"We are disappointed with the ruling and believe that the dissenting opinion was correct. Nonetheless, we understand that the majority opinion is final. We continue to believe that it was the right thing to do to take this case through the Courts. We also continue to believe that The Glebe is an asset to Botetourt County and are prepared to move on accordingly."

Shoney Bear visiting with children during Red Ribbon Week

Shoney Bear visited Troutville Elementary School during Red Ribbon Week last week. Shoney Bear handed out lollipops that read "Don't be a sucker-be drug free", some pencils, crayons and coloring papers. The kids all had a blast dancing with Shoney Bear and giving him high5's as well as getting hundreds of hugs! The children learned a lot and participated in many fun activities during the week. Thanks for all the hard work everyone put worth to make this a wonderful week!

Photos of Daisy Girl Scout Troop 1203 tea party

Daisy Girl Scout Troop 1203 recently held a tea party. The girls arrived dressed up in their "Sunday best" and brought either a stuffed animal or a doll. Just like in their Founder Juliette Low's Day, the girls raised their pinkies to sip from dainty cups. After the Tea Party, the girls made a scarecrow paper bag craft. This scouting year, the troop has grown from 12 girls to 16 girls! A special thanks to Grace Tucker's Dad as well as all the Moms for being a great help during the party.

The James River Knights golf team finished first in the Pioneer district for the 8th year in a row, but had a difficult time in the regions said John Shotwell who coaches the team. Travis Sprinkle and Brent Cummings made All Pioneer District.

"I am excited about next season. We had a young team and they will keep at it. If we can improve 5 strokes per person then I think we will be the force to be reckoned with in State next year. Irina Boothe our female player can be as good as she wants to be. I think she will go far with her play," said Shotwell.

Operation Warm Winter continues RVBA mission

Karen Conner of the Botetourt Funeral Home shows a coat ready to be sent to Sioux Reservations in North and South Dakota.

Karen Conner of the Botetourt Funeral Home shows a coat ready to be sent to Sioux Reservations in North and South Dakota.

"Operation Warm Winter" is about to take off. Many Botetourt citizens have been working on the Roanoke Valley Baptist Association mission to Sioux reservations in North and South Dakota to serve the Native American communities there. For the last several summers a group of Botetourt youth and adults primarily from the Buchanan Area, have headed out to the reservation to teach Bible School and assist around the communities with projects.

At Botetourt Funeral Home, Ray and Bobbi Sloan and Karen Conner are collecting winter clothing for Operation Warm Winter. They have received new and gently worn coats, sweatshirts, hoodies, sweat pants and so forth, boots, coats and winter hand and foot gear for the mission trip. The trip kick-off on November 15 when a group of four drivers, Jerry Sweet, Harold Cook, Bubby Entsminger and Ray Sloan will head off with trailer and a Penske truck full of warm clothing. Clothing donations can be brought to the funeral which is located on Route 11 North near Exit 162 on the way to Buchanan. Call Sloan at 254-3000 or Cook at 254-1502 to make arrangements to deliver clothing. A $2 per coat donation would be appreciated for transportation costs they said.

Botetourt Funeral Home has large garage around back that houses work trucks for the. In the garage are shelves filled with boxes already packed with clothing and another stack waiting to be sorted and packed that is almost as tall as Karen Conner's head when she picks up parkas and jackets to show the Botetourt View. The group will finish sorting and packing the clothing mid week November 11 and 12 before they take-off on the trip to deliver the boxes to five sites on the reservation.

The fact of the matter is they also need monetary donations to fund the trip. So far money has come in slower than clothing and they need to pay for gas, food and lodging on the trip across the United States both coming and going. To make a donation, earmark checks, "Operation Warm Winter." The checks can be made payable to RVBA, 3926 Plantation Road, Roanoke, Virginia 24012. "Every little bit helps." said Ray Sloan.

Perfect weather tonight for Halloween and football

Weather journalist Kevin Myatt says tonight's weather for trick-or-treating and football will be, well, let's let him say it: "PERFECT! Clear skies, dry, temperatures falling from the 60s through the 50s. Maybe a little chillier than that at game's end."

For details, see his latest post on his Weather Journal blog.

While we're at it, let's use this occasion to make a shout-out for Halloween photos. You can share at news@botetourtview.com and we'll post them here in our Halloween gallery -- so check back through the weekend to see what we've got.

FFA members like Matthew Taylor pictured here will be selling fruit--get yours now!

FFA Sponosor Stuart Byrd sent this announcement, the FFA really needs the public's help he said:

The Lord Botetourt FFA is kicking off its annual citrus fruit sale.

Each year the FFA sells citrus fruit just in time to be delivered fresh from Florida. This year the fruit will be at the school ready for pickup on December 9th 2008 just in time for Christmas. We will be taking orders through the 23rd of November. Our annual fruit sales is one of our largest fund raising programs with the money going to support our chapter activities for the year. Last year the FFA used the money to buy presents for patients at local nursing homes in the area, made donations to the Toys-for-Tots program and was able to send several students to leadership development events. This year we hope to do even more with your help.

We currently sell 5 varieties including Red Navel Oranges, Navel Oranges, Tangelo Oranges, Hamlin (Juice) Oranges, and Ruby Red Grapefruit. You can purchase these in either a 4/5 bushel (approximately 40 lb.) box for $22.00 or in the 2/5 bushel (approximately 20 lb.) box for $14.00. We also have sunburst tangerines available in the 2/5 bushel size for $18.00. For those who would like a variety of fruit we are selling two 4/5 bushel variety boxes for $24.00 one is a 1/3 variety mix of Navels, Tangelos, and Red Grapefruit, and a ½ variety mix of Navels and red Grapefruit.

To place an order please call the School at (540) 992-1261 between the hours of 8:00am and 4:00pm. Thanks again for your continued support.
