James River readers head to October Sky Festival on Saturday October 4 in Coalwood, West Virginia
Homer Hickam, the author of Rocket Boys (i.e. October Sky,) issued a special invitation to the school to come to the 10th annual festival and he has sent them an autographed picture as well. The students who participated in the James River summer reading program have an opportunity for a trip out to Coalwood, West Virginia on Saturday. They will be leaving the school before the sun comes up. The students have hopes of meeting Hickam at the festival.
The other "rocket boys" in the book will attend as well, as the widow of Bob Denver of Gilligan's Island fame, Dr. Tom Jones a space shuttle astronaut and others.
Hickam is a prolific writer has numerous books and a new fiction book, Red Helmet,on the market. He digs for dinosaur bones in the west when he has time. Now a resident of Huntsville, Alabama the author realized his dream to work for NASA.
A special welcome will await them when they arrive according to an email from Hickam's wife, Linda, a few weeks ago. The non-fiction written by Hickam has been used as a text to incorporate across the curriculum. this year for instance, Homecoming is against the Craig County Rockets.
138 students completed the project. Those who registered to go on the trip, will ride a school bus to the Festival
