Fincastle Run -- Oh, what a day!

Hundreds of Elementary students from across Botetourt County ran in the Fincastle Run

The Fincastle 5K and 10K run featured over 900 runners and most of them were kids!

The Botetourt View set up next to the Fincastle Methodist Family Life Center with Boy Scout Troop 137 at the water table at the Bank of Fincastle's 22nd annual run. Scoutmaster Mark Woodie remarked about 9:15a.m., "Pretty soon you will see a fast skinny guy round the corner." And indeed he was right -- ahead of the pack David Angel, who won the 5K, zoomed past. Other adult 5K and 10K runners rounded Roanoke Street behind him.

Nothing, however, could prepare one for the sight of hundreds of elementary and middle school age runners in colorful t-shirts not unlike autumn leaves scattering the road, as they rounded the corner. It looked like the Boston Marathon in Smallville!

Over at the awards held in the Central Academy gym, Cloverdale Elementary won the Elementary School runners division and Troutville won for the highest percentage of participants for the age division with 32. 1 per cent of the student body in the race. Read Mountain Middle School finished first in the Middle School Division in team and overall, but Central Acadmey was close behind!

David Angel won the men's 5K and Jackie Kosakowski won the Women's. Jim Cox-Nicol placed first in the 10 K and Lisa Turney came in first in the Women's.

Two volunteers, Cecil Hoyt and John Osborne, both of whom have cancer, were honored for their dedication and service.
