Now is the Time for Flu Vaccine!

Each year in the United States, on average, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu-related complications and 36,000 die. Now is the time to protect yourself and your family by getting vaccinated.

The Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts are revving up their “Shoo the Flu. Get the Shot” campaign to encourage everyone to get vaccinated.

“Getting a flu shot is one of the best ways to prevent getting sick from the flu,” commented Dr. Stephanie L. Harper, Health Director, Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts, “and the best time to get vaccinated is now .”

The Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts will hold 5 special flu clinics. All insurances will be accepted for payment.  There will be 450 doses of free adult vaccine available per district to those without insurance or to those with insurance that does not cover the cost of the flu vaccine.

Flu vaccine is available at local health departments, local medical providers, and at some local retailers such as grocery stores and drug stores.

The Virginia Department of Health recommends that children between the ages of six months and 18 years get vaccinated. In addition, pregnant women, individuals 50 and older, and people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, heart and lung disease should be vaccinated annually. People who are close contacts of these groups should also get vaccinated in order to protect them and their contacts.
