Read Mountain Middle School is red hot with Red Ribbon Week, the anti-drug and alcohol campaign that is state and nationwide. The creative and energetic result is everything from banners to red ribbon bookmarks surround the students through out the their school day!

The FFA decorated the outside of the school and the Builders Club the inside, but the activities were the brainchild of Mrs. Debbie Yost, the business and technology teacher. "I had a a lot of help from many groups and teachers," she said with a friendly smile.

On Monday the the kids wore their tops back wards to symbolize turning their backs on drugs. On Tuesday for a .25 cent donation the students could wear a hat. Wednesday was tie day and the Door Decoration contest where every home room decorated a door for judging. On Thursday every one is wearing red and on Friday the students and teachers are having crazy sock day. To see more, click activities.

To raise money, they held a poster contest. They have distributed red ribbons in the car rider line, have pledge cards in the office and guidance to say no to drugs and alcohol and include in that PTA pledges from parents to have alcohol and drug free gatherings.

"The FCCLA has a "hugs instead of drugs" Teddy Bear drive and will donate the bears to the Rescue Mission," said Yost. The Character Counts Council(CCC) collected funds for the Susan G. Koman Foundation, too. Art students made mosaic collages of themselves with anti drug slogans.

Even the cafeteria got in the groove with red food each day--raspberry sherbert cups, apples, cranberries and granola, marinara sauce and cake with frosting. The week is also combined with Character Counts week as well stated Yost.
