Five Botetourt companies have ties to auto industry
The American auto industry is in trouble and representatives have been in Washington recently asking for help. Around Botetourt County five major employers are auto industry related and those here in the know are worried what might happen in the related industries if one of the major automakers in America were to go under.
The companies are Virginia Forge in Buchanan, Dynex in Cloverdale, JTekt and Altec in Greenfield and Metalsa in the Hollins end of the county. Parts and truck buckets and other assorted parts constructed for steering, transmissions and wheels are among the products produced by these companies.
Jerry Burgess, Botetourt County Administrator, had this to say about the importance of these industries to the economic and social health of Botetourt County. " I call this our automotive cluster. They include companies that are based in three countries, the U.S., Mexico and Japan. In 2007 they paid a combined total of $1,685, 000 in local taxes and, as of April this year, employed 1,278 individuals.
He continued, " Not only do they have a major economic impact, they also contribute monetarily to community programs and provide community volunteers. We are very lucky to have them in Botetourt.
Just another example of area ties to the greater economic picture in the United States and the world and why what happens with the big automakers could have a direct impact on Botetourt County.
