Read Mountain and Central Academy induct new Honor Society members
Read Mountain and Central Academy Middle Schools held their third annual induction ceremonies for new National Junior Honor Society members. A total of 118 new members joined RMMS & CAMS NJHS for the 2008-2009 school year.
National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character, and Citizenship. Seventh and eighth grade students with a grade point average of 3.5 or above are invited to apply for membership at the beginning of each school year. Students must demonstrate characteristics of service, character, and citizenship through recommendations of teachers and community members. They must collect these recommendations and complete a short essay in order to be considered for membership.

Members are required to participate in at least one service project per semester. Students provide the ideas, contacts, organization, and leadership for these projects.
Last year, students participated in a number of service projects, helping those in our own community and across the country. They raised money for the American Cancer Society through Relay for Life, they replanted and cared for the school grounds, they volunteered at the Angels of Assisi animal shelter, they held a family dinner and movie night to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House, they volunteered as teacher's helpers at Mill Creek preschool, they taught students with special needs who visited from the elementary school, they collected school supplies for children in Iraq ,and they volunteered at Troutville and Colonial Elementary School carnivals. NJHS students look forward to a busy year of helping others in our community.
