Glebe Handicrafters decorate trees at the Glebe and Hotel Roanoke
When one of the Glebe Handicrafters, Joy Patten, read about the Christmas tree pics the Botetourt View wanted for publication, she quickly put a snap shot and note in the drop box at Mill Mountain Coffee Shop. Oh, but they have done such a terrific job with trees and crafts, they deserved more than one picture!
The group meets every Wednesday. Members of the group are Anne da Costa, Florence Durman, Charlotte Yeatts, Evelyn Hokanson, Odessa Milburn, Joy Patten, Wanda Parker, Verna Jones and Karen Pierce, Director of Residence Services. They have also decorated a tree for the festival of trees at Hotel Roanoke complete with golden goose eggs and a Mother goose and gosling.
At the Glebe, they have decorated a Chrismon tree.
One Handicrafter member and resident, Verna Jones made 148 of the Chrismon ornaments. All of the Chrismons are either needlecraft, counted cross stitch, beaded or sewn. No styrofoam for this tree! Anne da Costa had this information about Chrismon trees.
"The Chrismon tree originated in 1957. From the beginning, the idea has spread th Christians all over the world. The evergreen tree symbolizes eternal life which is what Christ has won for us. White lights and gold and white ornaments represent Christ as the light of the world. The symbols made into ornaments remind us of Christ and also of God's never changing presence in our lives."
They hold a craft fair to sell their wares to earn money for the Benevolence Fund at The Glebe. They still have some items left, here are pictures. So far they have raised $1,668 for the fund. Anne da Costa can be reached at 591-2336 if anyone wants to look at the angels and ornaments they have for sale.
