Freezing rain advisory issued for Botetourt

The National Weather Service has issued a freezing rain advisory for Botetourt through 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Weather journalist Kevin Myatt has details on his Weather Journal blog.

Kevin emphasizes that  this advisory is for "higher elevations." He says that winter weather advisories are issued countywide, even if only part of a county is likely to get hit.

So, kids, don't get too excited about getting out of school just yet.

Nevertheless, whenever we do have school closings, they'll be listed on roanoke.com.

AREAS OF FREEZING RAIN EXPECTED TONIGHT...

.A SHALLOW LAYER OF COLD AIR IS CONTINUING TO PUSH SOUTHWARD INTO
THE REGION. MEANWHILE...SOUTHWEST FLOW ABOVE THE COLD LAYER...
ALONG WITH AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE...WILL BRING WIDESPREAD LIGHT
RAIN OVERNIGHT. TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO DIP BELOW FREEZING...
PARTICULARLY ALONG THE BLUE RIDGE AND OTHER EASTERN FACING SLOPES.
GROUND TEMPERATURES ARE WARM AND RAINFALL AMOUNTS WILL BE LIGHT...
SO ICING SHOULD BE ELEVATED...AND LESS THAN A QUARTER OF AN INCH.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN BLACKSBURG HAS ISSUED A FREEZING
RAIN ADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM EST WEDNESDAY.

THERE WILL BE PERIODS OF RAIN OVERNIGHT. TEMPERATURES IN THE
HIGHER ELEVATIONS WILL LIKELY DROP BELOW FREEZING FOR A FEW
HOURS...PARTICULARLY ALONG THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY. THE ICING
SHOULD BE MAINLY ELEVATED...ALTHOUGH BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES MAY
BECOME ICY. ICE ACCUMULATIONS SHOULD BE A TENTH OF AN INCH OR
LESS FOR MOST LOCATIONS.

A FREEZING RAIN ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF FREEZING RAIN OR
FREEZING DRIZZLE WILL LIKELY CAUSE TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE
PREPARED FOR SLIPPERY ROADS. SLOW DOWN AND USE CAUTION WHILE
DRIVING.
