Womanless Pageant gives Relay for Life a real boost!
The Buchanan Theatre was packed on Friday night, April 17, as eight lovelies -- men dressed as women -- competed for the title of Miss Buchanan Relay for Life in a womanless beauty pageant. Needless to say, the crowd was not disappointed! While beauty is stretching the definition, the men were good sports for a worthy cause.
The audience was treated to some real talent came from the two performers who played and sang between scenes, Jessie Kidd and Mike Lee. Robynn James of Star Country 94.9 served as the Emcee for the evening noting how cancer had touched her-- she lost her father to cancer, she is a survivor of breast cancer and her mother is one year cancer-free.
The contestants were raucous and, well, there is nothing quite like a man in a dress dancing down the aisle of a theater. They were J.D. "Jasime Divine" Robinson, James "Geraldine Clower" Booth, Nathan "Notorious Natalie" Mullins, Jordan "Lawfandah" Copper, David "Buck Rock Beauty" Bowers, David "Dirty Sally" Alexander, Devin "Marvelous Marley" Wolfe and Mark "Hannah" Ray. The judges Harry Gleason, Shiela Bankert and George Ewen had a really difficult choice when picking winners out of the field, so the crowd joined in and stuffed bucks into predesignated envelopes for the contestants.
The event was sponsored by SRO, The Buchanan Theatre, Buchanan Florist, Bojangles, Scott's Thrift Store, New Reflections, Blue Collar Joe's, Stylin' Shed, Troutville Texaco and Elizabeth Arden. Choreographers were Jennifer Learn and Danielle Mitchell.
A real true beauty Queen, Morgan Wampler, Miss Cavalier, Queen for a Cure, crowned the winners. J.D. "Jasmine Devine" Robinson was second runner up, Mark "Hannah" Ray was first runner up and David "Dirty Sally" Alexander, who actually did display real flatfooting talent, was crowned the winner. What a night of fun and for such a great cause! We have a Photo Gallery
