Gus the dog tried very hard to keep these goats out of the road.

Around 2 p.m. a vary large white dog, a Great Pyrenees by the look of him, tried his best to keep three goats out of harm's way near the intersection of Trinity Road and Lee Highway, north Route 11. Deborah Quiran, the owner of Delaine's, called animal control when the goats and dog ran through her yard.

Soon three animal control trucks, including Animal Control Officer A.T. Thrasher pictured above, an investigator and a deputy arrived. The goats one and two surrendered easily and the dog, whose name is Gus, kept protecting the Nannie goat. They ran around and around the plumbing company yard. The dog barked at the officers and he was foaming a bit from near exhaustion as Nannie stayed right with him. The officers were very calm towards the dog and goat, but could not capture them. Finally a neighbor offered some baloney and the owner came back with sweet feed and dog food. Nannie was captured and loaded into the truck for a trip home.

All was getting back to normal as the goats were captured and Gus began to calm down. Even though Animal Control had trucks with lights flashing parked along Route 11, a few folks on Lee Highway slammed on brakes when Nannie and Gus entered the highway a few times. Fortunately no one or animal was injured and as herd dogs go, Gus earned his keep today trying to keep his goats safe!
