Traveler stops in Troutville

Steve Young a native Floridian is walking to raise awareness for Victory Junction

Steve Young a native Floridian is walking to raise awareness for Victory Junction.

Steve Young, a native Floridian, has walked thousands of  miles spreading the word for Victory Junction and for the fight against cancer. He was in Troutville last week heading to Vermont. So far he has walked from Florida to California east and west, in a big looping oval on his map since October 2007. Young is a born again Christian and spreads his message to churches along the way.The support of kind people has gotten him across the country and back.

He speaks of a friend growing up who had severe congenital birth defects. Watching her and other children he has encountered that have cancer and debilitating disease got the life long race fan interested in Victory Junction a camp for children with disabilities and cancer sponsored by Kyle Petty and part of the Hole in Wall gang system began by the late Paul Newman.

He has met hundreds of people and seen many small out of the way spots through out the United States. He has taken rolls and rolls of film. Upon completion of the north to south trip he plans to relocate from near Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Patrick Springs, Virginia and finish his book. He has titled the work, "I went out for Milk and Never came back." So far he has written 41 chapters.

Young walks when the sun is shining carrying an 80 pound pack, so he stayed in Botetourt a couple of days at the Troutville Park. He hopes to be finished the trip by mid September.
