VDOT makes a clarification on Swinging Bridge story
From Heidi Underwood, VDOT public relations:
"From what VDOT bridge inspectors have measured, the pedestrian bridge has not sagged, however once our inspectors discovered that the foundation block on one side of the stream was in poor condition, we were forced to close the bridge for safety. Fire and rescue services have traditionally been forced to ford the stream to get to this area, as the pedestrian bridge would not have supported firefighting and rescue equipment.
VDOT has maintained this pedestrian bridge as far back as we have records. However, as mentioned, VDOT does not currently have the funds available to replace the bridge, as engineers estimate the cost to replace the foundation is more than $30,000."
