MIKEY MOYERS EARNS MEDALIST HONORS AT THE
96th VSGA AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
SUFFOLK –– With his first round score basically assuring a place in the match play field, for Mikey Moyers the only matter unresolved in stroke play qualifying at the 96th VSGA State Am was a matter of history.
Moyers, an 18-year-old Stanardsville resident, is now a part of VSGA State Amateur lore.
Moyers delivered his second consecutive round of 66 to set the championship’s 36-hole stroke play qualifying scoring record of 12-under 132 at Cedar Point Country Club (7,109 yards, par 36-36—72). Moyers’ to-par total is also an event-best mark for 36-hole qualifying. He earned medalist honors and the top seed for match play which begins on Thursday.
Record seven-time VSGA State Am champion Vinny Giles posted a 133 (68-65) aggregate at par-70 James River Country Club in Newport News in 1993. McLean’s Peter Badawy previously posted a to-par total of nine under (135) at par-72 Lowes Island Club’s Island Course in 2007.
In second round action, Moyers made birdies at Nos. 1 and 3 before making his first two bogeys of stroke play qualifying at Nos. 4 and 5. Moyers answered by registering six birdies in an 11-hole stretch from Nos. 6-16.
For Moyers, the surge started by making a 13-foot birdie putt at No. 6 and he drained a 7-footer one hole later to turn in two under. Continuing his solid putting, Moyers rolled in his birdie attempt at the par-4 10th hole that covered 10 feet of fringe before the left to right breaking birdie chance fell in the right side. He then reeled off three straight birdies from Nos. 14-16 to complete a stretch of making 14 birdies in two days of stroke play qualifying.
Solid ball-striking set up the opportunities, but he converted the chances with timely putting.
“A few putts can change your whole round and that’s what’s happened out here,” said Moyers, a recent graduate of William Monroe High School who is bound for Virginia Tech in the fall. “I haven’t hit it any differently than I have all year. The putts started falling because the greens are perfect. When you can hit it where you’re looking, it’s pretty easy.”
Moyers, who last week won his record third straight VSGA Junior Match Play Championship by triumphing over four opponents in two days, is certainly familiar with the subtleties of match play. Successfully navigating the remaining field at the VSGA State Am is his next challenge.
Medalist honors have meant little recently as the top seed has fallen in the opening round for three straight years from 2006-08. Since 1970, only Billy Hurley, who captured the 2004 championship at Roanoke Country Club, has won the medal and gone on to capture the title.
“All 32 players can shoot under par, so you’re never going to get an easy match,” said Moyers, who also won the Virginia High School League Group AA individual title in the fall. “I hope I keep doing the same thing – I don’t want to go away from this.”
Moyers was a part of the morning wave that played in relatively benign conditions. The wind picked up in the afternoon and scores skyrocketed.
At 2-over 146 following his morning round, two-time VSGA State Am champion Keith Decker of Martinsville appeared in jeopardy of missing match play for the first time in 20-plus VSGA State Am appearances.
But mid-amateurs Jeffrey Topp of Fairfax (70) and Jason Robertson of Virginia Beach (71) carded the only two rounds in red numbers after lunch; thereafter, eight players at 3-over 147 vied for one spot in the match play field. Charlottesville’s Weston Eklund, a rising sophomore at Radford University, made an 8-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole, the par-4 10th, and will face the top-seeded Moyers in Thursday’s opening round of match play.
More than half of the remaining field – 17 players in all – is comprised of junior golfers and college players. Nine junior golfers (ages 18-and-under) and eight college players advanced to the match play portion of the championship.
Defending champion and second-seeded Brinson Paolini, 18, of Virginia Beach (73, 139) will take on Decker in the opening round of match play. Fincastle’s Kyle Bailey, a rising senior at Radford University and 17-year-old Nicholas Austin of Midlothian are seeded Nos. 3 and 4, respectively.
Central Virginia framing contractor Tim Kelley, 53, of Ashland, the recent winner of the Richmond Golf Association Amateur Championship, completes the top five seeds.
The youngest player in the match play field, 16-year-old Bryce Chalkey (Glen Allen) will face the most veteran in 55-year-old Pat Tallent (Vienna), the 2007 VSGA State Am champion.
Following Thursday’s first two rounds of match play, the quarterfinals and semifinals are Friday, June 26 and the scheduled 36-hole championship match is on Saturday, June 27.
