Mysterious cross appeared briefly on Newtown Road last Sunday

this cross appeared on the house wall next to the home of Thelma McCracken and Carol Pajak in Buchanan last Sunday.

This cross appeared on the house wall next to the home of Thelma McCracken and Carol Pajak in Buchanan last Sunday.

Sunday afternoon October 18 brought a real surprise and joy to two Buchanan residents and they wanted to share the event with Botetourt County.

Thelma McCracken, who resides with her daughter Carol Pajak sat in the sunroom of their home and just happened to look over at the wall on her neighbor's house . "The sun was behind the house so this was not a direct reflection at all," explained McCracken.  McCracken called for her daughter to grab the camera and take a photograph of what looked like a Celtic Cross in golden light on the wall. In less than few moments the light disappeared.

In the sunny room on Wednesday accompanied by two dogs and a cat, the Botetourt View got a look at the photos of what McCraken and Pajak saw as a sign from above.

They went to Walmart on Monday and made a paper copy of the cross, but allowed the Botetourt View to download the picture from the chip. That is what you see here-- it doesn't look photoshopped --and well they seem to be the type of ladies who wouldn't do that anyway.

Though they have looked all over the yard, they have yet to find anything that could possibly be the cause. By looking in the yard nothing was apparent to the Botetourt View, either. Both ladies attend Buchanan Presbyterian Church.

So what do the ladies think? "I believe it was a sign," said McCraken. "I have been recovering from a hip fracture and then I fell at the Nursing home during rehab and had more fractures. The neighbor where the cross appeared just had open heart surgery. I just think in all the hard times that it was a sign that everything is going to be all right."

What a nice way to start the weekend! Let us know what you think, remember the sun is behind the house where the cross is located.   news@botetourtview.com

  1. Looks the the reflection off a Yield sign on the street. There are always explanations but people enjoy believing otherwise.

  2. Doesn't look like "Yield" to me I am not sure a yellow sign would reflect. Doubting Thomas is always around!

  3. This Doubting Thomas would have walked over, stood directly in front of the reflection and determined where it was coming from. I doubt there would have been any mystery remaining. All the same, it's a sweet photo and it's nice that they were comforted by it.
