Photos: I-81 slowed by accident at mile marker 168 near Buchanan

AAA of Virginia said this is the busiest driving day of the year. Perhaps it is, but traffic on I-81 south slowed dramatically this morning when an accident took place at Exit 168 southbound. State police said theĀ  lane was closed until the accident can be cleared.

Our rovingĀ  photographer S J Carter took these pictures and added, "This morning there was an accident on I-81 south at mm 168. Appeared to be single car (although it was a pickup truck). Not sure how it managed to land on top of the guard rail. There were injuries. It occurred just after 8a.m. Buchanan Fire & Rescue were on the scene."

  2. My wife were directly behind the vehicle when the accident occurred. Within a minute or two we had a nurse (the lady in the white blouse) and an EMT as well as several other good Samaritans.

The truck ended up on the guardrail because when it struck the guardrail it both flipped and rolled 360 degrees, the driver came out of the vehicle as it landed and she landed in about the safest place at that point. For those interested the driver's side was most damaged because when the vehicle struck the guardrail perpendicularly the truck still had momentum going southbound which pressed that side of the truck against the guardrail and made the truck roll in that direction.
