Farmers markets prepare for busy weekend

Barry Robinson, an extension agent with the Virginia Cooperative Extension, reminds everyone that the two Montgomery County farmers markets will be busy this weekend. Here is what he sent along today:

The Blacksburg Farmers' Market is having a "Ground Renewal Celebration" (market renovation), from 10am - 1pm on Roanoke Street between Draper and Otey Streets.

The Shawsville Farmers' Market is having a "Preservation Day", from 9am - 12pm, at the Meadowbrook Center.  There will be info on gardening and food preservation.

I encourage you to support your local food producers by visiting and purchasing food, plants and craft items at a farmers' market near you.

Barry

And Meredith Novak, the market manager in Shawsville, provided more specifics in her Friday update:

Come on down and see us at the Shawsville Farmers Market this Saturday, July 11th from 9am-12 pm. We'll be located in the front of Meadowbrook (corner of US 460 and Alleghany Spring Rd)

Tina Badger
Tina will have a selection of photos of our regional and local landscapes and wildflowers for sale.

Brush Creek Aquaponics
Sandy and Ralph will have duck eggs, and homemade greeting cards, soap (new varieties!), and button badges for teachers, sports, summer weddings, and other special events and people. They can help you create your own custom button. They will also have mint plants: spearmint, chocolate mint, apple/pineapple mint, and lemon balm, and information on keeping eggs fresh longer.

Children's Craft Table
There will be a free children's craft table set up at Market Saturday, courtesy of Meadowbrook Library.

EastMont Massage Therapy
Amy will be at the Market offering chair massages. Come get your aching muscles worked on!

Fran Forstadt
Fran will be at the Market with a solar food cooker on display. Come by and see it in action! Fran will have free information on how to make this cooker out of cardboard and aluminum foil.

Goodwin Farm
Marie will have blueberries, zucchini, eggs, honey and dried herbs.

New River Gourmet
Melissa will have a large variety of dried fruit, nuts, spices, plus homemade raspberry and apricot jams.

Rhonda's Homemade Baked Goods
Rhonda will have sourdough bread, honey wheat bread,
strawberry pineapple macadamia nut bread, pumpkin cranberry bread, pecan pies, coconut creme pound cakes, and pecan toffee bars.

And don't miss our Second Saturday in Shawsville event, Preservation Day! Cooperative Extension will be there with information on canning, freezing and dehydrating foods. Bring your pressure canner lid and have your pressure gauge tested!
Local Master Gardeners will be holding a Plant Clinic, bring photos or samples of your plant problems and they'll help you get a diagnosis!
See attached flier for more information.

Not to be outdone, Blacksburg also sent out the following additional information:

Art at the Market

Saturday July 18, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Blacksburg's 2009 celebration of fine art and artists on the lawn in front of the Virginia Tech Media Building. This exposition of unique works will showcase local artists in all visual media.

Art at the Market will be held in conjunction with the annual Breakfast at the Farmer's Market, a family event featuring wonderful food, live music and the best produce the farmers have to offer! Make it a family affair and take in some art along with breakfast.

Sponsored by Mish Mish, Fringe Benefit, The Lyric and Community Arts Information Office and the Downtown Merchants of Blacksburg. Event supported by The Town of Blacksburg.
