JAY HARDWICK WINS THE 4TH SENIOR OPEN OF VIRGINIA
RICHMOND –– Virginia Tech men’s golf coach Jay Hardwick will have a new piece of hardware to show his youth-laden team when the program opens its fall schedule on Monday in central Virginia.
Hardwick, a 60-year-old PGA professional, posted his second straight round of 1-under-par 69 to record a one-stroke victory as the 4th Senior Open of Virginia concluded today at The Country Club of Virginia’s Westhampton Course (6,044 yards, par 34-36—70). The Blacksburg resident took home the Harry W. Easterly Trophy, honoring the late VSGA and USGA president.
Hardwick completed the championship at 2-under-par 138. He finished a stroke clear of two other competitors who also delivered a round in the 60s: defending champion Jon Corliss, the PGA teaching professional at Heron Ridge Golf Club in Virginia Beach, as well as Dean Sumner, the PGA professional at Quinton Oaks Golf Course in Callao, who closed action a 1-under 139. Corliss shot a final-round 69, while Sumner delivered the low round of the ’09 championship, firing 4-under 66.
