UVa beats Oral Roberts
Mark Berman back in Charlottesville, where UVa beat Oral Roberts 76-55.
Up 41-38, UVa went on a 21-4 run to grab a 62-42 kead with 8:46 to go.
"When we got the ball rotated, .... it seemed like we could get the kind of looks we wanted, whether it was rhythm 3s, post touches, creation off the dribble," UVa coach Tony Bennett said. "Using a little more of a traditional lineup, we went with two bigs, we got a few more second-chance points instead of four guards who don't get on the glass as much on the offensive end.
Oral Roberts shot just 25.9 percent from the field in the second half. Oral Roberts was 7-of-11 from 3-point range in the first half, when Kyron Stokes had four treys, but the team was 0 for 6 in the second half.
"They probably did a better job of trying to find Kyron" in the second half, said Oral Roberts coach Scott Sutton, whose team was coming off Wednesday's 83-81 win over Stanford. "They make it awfully difficult for you to get easy points. .... Their size hurt us tonight."
"It was almost like we were daring (Stokes) to shoot," Bennett said of the first half. "We did get stuck on some screens early, and we had to be more alert helping when our guys get screened."
UVa won the battle of the boards 44-35.
"They had 12 offensive rebounds -- too many," Bennett said. "That's where Assane (Sene) helped us, where we didn't have to trap the post. We could play a little more one-on-one in the post, stay at home on shooters and then rebound a little better in the process."
UVa trailed 27-25 with 9:23 left in the first half before going on an 8-0 run that gave the Cavs the lead for good.
"We did not have a sense of urgency ... defensively coming out," Bennett said. "We weren't active. A lot of breakdowns early.... End of the first half, we started doing a better job on the glass, not allowing quite as many offensive rebounds, a little more active on the ball, handled the ball screen better, Assane gave us a nice lift with size."
Mike Scott had 15 points and 10 boards for UVa, while Kevin Ford had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Oral Roberts.
Mustapha Farrakhan had 13 points, as did Sammy Zeglinski. Sylven Landesberg had 14 points.
Sene had eight points and seven boards in 13 minutes in his season debut before fouling out in the final minute.
"He was productive," Bennett said. "He's an energy player. ... He's a very good help defender, and we need that."
Bennett joked that Sene not fouling out until 35 seconds to go was "progress, probably."
"We've got to get him to play with his feet and not his hands, and just be in proper position," Bennett said.
Oral Roberts point guard Roderick Pearson left the game with a knee injury late in the first half.
"When Pearson went out, I thought it really hurt our offense," Sutton said.
Dominique Morrison of Oral Roberts had seven points, down from 31 points vs. Stanford. Farrakhan did a good job of guarding him, said Bennett. Morrison was 3-of-15 from the field.
Next up is a trip to Cancun. Stanford, which has already lost to Oral Roberts and the Univ of San Diego, will face UVa on Tuesday. Then comes No. 4 Kentucky or Cleveland State.
"Stanford, that's all we're worried about right now," Bennett said. "They've got a very fine player in Landry Fields. .... They'll sometimes use four guards.
"When you play against, I don't want to say higher-level teams, but when you play against bigger teams, you're going to have to break them down at certain times, you're going to have to bring it from the start. You can't afford to be soft on the glass. You can't be sluggish at the start. You're going to have to play for closer to 40 minutes than maybe we have."
Sutton's perspective is interesting, having now played both Stanford and UVa.
"Virginia has a lot more weapons on offense (than Stanford) - a lot more athletic, got a little bit more size," Sutton said.
