Hokies beat Campbell
Mark Berman back in Buies Creek, NC, where Tech finally pulled away from Campbell 71-60.
Leading 52-51 with 6:51 left, Tech went on a 9-0 run to build a 61-51 cushion with 4:18 to go.
"It was just one of those games," said Malcolm Delaney, who had 15 points but was 3-of-13 from the field and topped the 1,000 point milestone. "I can't explain it. It was one of those games. I'm glad we had an off game now instead of later in the season. But it was a good game, we learned from it -- get a good win in a hostile environment."
Seth Greenberg implored his team to stay in front of the ball in the second half.
"They had a good offense, but we should've stopped them," Delaney said.
Campbell shot 55 percent from the field in the first half and 45.8 percent in the second. Delaney and Jeff Allen got in early foul trouble but went back in with 7:23 left in the first half.
"A couple fouls got called on us, and that forced us to drop back off," Delaney said. "We [were] really letting them score."
"They spread us out and drove us. We didn't guard the ball very well," Seth Greenberg said.
Allen got in foul trouble again in the 2nd half.
Tech shot 38.7 percent from the field in the first half but 52.2 percent in the second.
"We attacked the zone a little bit better (in the second half)," Greenberg said. "Missed so many easy shots. They missed easy shots too. I'm just happy we could get out of here with a win."
"Easy buckets that we [were] usually make, we were missing," Delaney said.
Tech also missed open shots against UNC Greensboro. Does this mean Tech misses AD Vassallo?
"A.D. don't have nothing to do with it. AD is gone. We can stop talking about AD," Delaney said. "We make them in practice. We've got to make them in the game."
After struggling to beat an Atlantic Sun team, is Tech ready for 2009 NCAA tourney team Temple (2-1), which beat a good Siena team and threw a big scare into Georgetown?
"We'll have a much better game," Delaney said of Friday. "We're going to be better."
"We've got a tough stretch coming up," Greenberg said.
JT Thompson had 17 points for the Hokies. He was 8 of 12 from the field.
"JT played like we expect JT to play," Greenberg said.
Greenberg tossed his jacket after a Campbell dunk late in the first half. He chewed out his players in a timeout, and again in another timeout after a Campbell 3-pointer soon after in the half.
"We {were] confused on what defense we [were] in," Delaney said.
"I changed defense in a timeout (earlier) and guys didn't pay attention. Did it twice," Greenberg said. "I was a little disappointed. .... I got upset because we didn't change defenses. Besides that one temporary out of body experience I was pretty calm out there."
Greenberg got a a warning from an official in the first half.
"I just asked him to look for a walk, traveling." Greenberg said.

The ACC schedule is gonna be brutal for the Hokies this season.

I agree with Stiney, Tech should have beat all these teams by 30 points. Couldn't shoot last year, can't shoot this year. Most ACC teams shoot a better percentage from the 3 pt arc than we do from inside it. Long year in the ACC if things don't improve.
