Concert review: Angelique Kidjo
The talented and charismatic Angelique Kidjo put on an amazing performance. Here's the deadwood version of the review.
And now for a few notes that didn't fit into 12 column inches of print ...
It's getting to be an old saw here -- the musician who also cracks up an audience. But that's what the crowd saw and heard on Thursday night.
"Stupidity is universal. That's why we're all brothers and sisters," she said, sparking a big laugh. " ... But that never stopped me from loving people."
Early on, she got applause and calls of "yes!" when she told the audience it would have to dance. She added: "Don't say 'Yes' and continue sitting down! Don't say yes for me. Say yes for yourselves."
Her voice, a strong instrument, made one forget about her collaborators on her new CD, "Djin Djin," the Grammy winner for best contemporary world music album.
The disc's title cut featured Alicia Keys. Kidjo didn't need her. Her cover of the Rolling Stones "Gimme Shelter" featured Joss Stone. Live, she wasn't missed.
Finally, it's too bad this show didn't sell out. Kidjo and her band are top-shelf, and deserve a full house anywhere they play.

I attended the Kidjo show at the Jefferson Center and I found it to be PHENOMENAL!!!! I am now a fan of this type of music and if you missed the show you missed a treat. Truthfully, more people of color should have supported this show instead of sitting at home. Lets face it, its not much for Afro-Americans; professional or otherwise, to do in Roanoke! Nonetheless, I loved the show, the energy was amazing and the message was clear.. We as a people need to do better! YOU MISSED A TRUE GEM OF A SHOW!!!

I agree that it is a shame this didn't sell out, but it's their loss. I had never heard Angelique Kidjo before Thursday, but I am today a fan. I would love to see her perform again at an outdoor venue -- Elmwood Park? If you ever have the chance to see her live, do NOT miss it.
