Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band and the Avett Brothers
I was planning to post a lot this afternoon, but my laptop tanked, a power issue at the Internet kiosk just killed an entry, and I want to see the Avetts. So here's a quick post, and the last one today.
First, The Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band just flat rocked it. Four shows here, and the group became the buzz of the festival. Someone has got to bring them in for a date in Roanoke, Blacksburg or Floyd before the next fest. Please.
The reverend's Piedmont blues on acid, wildly varying tempos and musical sidekicks -- his wife on washboard and his brother on drums -- are strengthened by the force of his personality. Peyton wants singalongs on every song, and plenty of new fans at FloydFest complied.
Check this act out!
If you're a big fan of the Avett Brothers, then you know that today's final act recently signed with Columbia/American Records, and their next CD will be a Rick Rubin production. Now I'm going to catch the rest of the band's set, and look forward to what happens with the Avetts and Rubin.
If you're not in Floyd to catch the band, they'll be at Jefferson Center on September 19.
There are a ton of people I'd like to mention here, and I'll try to wrap that up tomorrow. But for now, I'm out.

Yo,
Did you sleep in today?
Went to FF Sunday but didn't see you. I was at the Rev. Peyton gig -- kinda like Bo Didley meets Nirvana on Hee Haw instead of "Crossorads". A real hoot(enanny).
Stayed for probably half the Avetts. They started with mostly new stuff -- I think I knew 2 of the first 5 songs (I don't have the new EP yet). Bet they finished in a fury.
Rick Rubin?! Columbia?! I'm afraid! Afraid!!! For whom, I don't know, but very afraid!
Everyone told me I should've seen Crooked Still ... which I did not.

On the contrary, sir. I probably slept three hours on Sunday morning.
For Rev. Peyton, I was standing back there on the back portion, by the rails. I didn't see you either. But it was pretty packed for most of the show.
That's a great descriptive comparison. He's wild, and the faces he makes while he's playing cracked me up. He, like Oliver Mtukudzi, knows how to connect with an audience, even though they did it in two completely different ways. And I have to say, Washboard Breezy is awesome.
Peyton puts me in mind of the guy on the old-school Mountain Dew glass bottles.
Crooked Still was mighty fine, but what you *really* missed was Dumpstaphunk. Best show I've seen in years, I swear.

Enjoying the commentary fine gentlemen...
The back porch Rev show sure had us moving in more ways than one.

I wish I could've seen that show! I missed the first three, except for what I heard of the first dance tent show, across from where I was posting blogs.
I'm guessing his energy level was just as high by the end, though.
Thanks for the comment. Was that your first FloydFest?
