The Wright Kids on "America's Got Talent" face mostly inept judges

“America’s Got Talent” is a circus of a television show. It’s good, old-fashioned, P.T. Barnum-approved American cheese. Host Jerry Springer is right in his element as he extends his media lifetime by way of the nation’s top-rated network program.

But swimming strongly in the sea of cheese is at least one diamond — a three-piece, acoustic band of siblings called The Wright Kids, from Franklin County. Sage, 12, Baruch, 9, and 6-year-old Levi are potentially brilliant and already multifaceted musicians.

Scott Miller to play solo show at Sun Music Hall

If you like hearing cool American roots songs with smart and funny lyrics, mark down Nov. 15. Scott Miller will be at Sun Music Hall, in Floyd. Tickets go on sale Sept. 22, according to the promoter, DLP Concerts.

Tickets aren't on sale yet, but here's a little link to help you plan ahead. The Waybacks, Culture, New Riders of the Purple Sage and the Afromotive will be in the room before Miller's show.

Here's some video of Miller playing his very cool "Amtrak Crescent," and cracking wise.

Correction to Top Tickets

Los Gatos' Blue 5 performance is on Saturday night. That information was incorrect in print and earlier online editions of The Roanoke Times and roanoke.com. See the corrected version here.

Thanks to Barefoot West's Kyle Forry for correcting me. His band, featuring my onetime guitar teacher, Corey Hunley, is playing tonight at the same spot. Get details at the aforementioned Top Tickets page.

Asylum Street Spankers to take a "long break" from the road

Here is a depressing angle on how the price of gas is affecting traveling bands. The Asylum Street Spankers, one of the most interesting bands out there, are leaving the road. Singer/multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Christina Marrs is saying a full-on "farewell to the road," after a short run through the Northwest, according to an e-mail from the band's publicist, John Riedie. And Riedie would know, because he and Marrs are married with children.

She will remain a band member, Riedie said, responding to a follow-up e-mail.

The rest of the band will "cut back drastically," according to the mail.

It reads, in part:

> Filling the tank may be somewhat less painful this week (link added by cutnscratch), but its still twice what it was two years ago. The $50 motel with an actual pillow has gone the way of a $5 lunch consisting of actual food. So what's a scrappy indie band to do in the worst touring environment they've ever faced? Riedie writes that the band is "not really breaking up, though." Recording is in the act's future.

More of the message, including tour dates, is below. Sadly, there are no dates in the valleys, where the band has played some really cool shows to receptive audiences.

40+40 Fest adds Paleface to musical lineup

One of the many highlights at this year's FloydFest was the dance tent performance from Paleface, a two-person band that slings the happy la-las with a tight groove and plenty o' sweat.

Good news -- the duo is playing Roanoke's Water Heater on Nov. 8, as part of the 40+40 Fest, which runs from Oct. 1-Nov. 9.
