Podcast live: Geoff Achison at Kirk Avenue Music Hall

When Australian guitar wizard Geoff Achison comes to town, he typically brings a bassist and drummer, but plays a couple of tunes solo. On Wednesday night at Kirk Avenue Music Hall, he showed that he really doesn't need a band. The guy's percussive, riff-wild acoustic style is just as much fun as his electric string-strangling with a band. With a pick in his right hand, or plucking with his fingers, he's an automatic guitar clinic. But the guy has soul, too.

Bonus: He called up Blacksburg's Hunter Pease, of the band Always Morning, to play a couple of tunes. The two had jammed together recently at Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Guitar Camp, and Achison was impressed enough to bring Pease onstage. They warmed up on a blues, then did a spacey jam in A and were clearly having fun.

Songs: "Can't Get You Off My Mind" | "Don't Play the Blues" | Jam in A (with Hunter Pease)
