When the Wading Girl broke up, Sarah Garrison had to figure out what to do next, and whether it would even be a musical thing. Quickly, she got an offer to join The Circus Band, aka Cirque Roanoke, aka The Circus Practice.

She's performing with that act on Sunday, and solo on Thursday as opening act for the latest Emerging Artists Series show at the Roanoke Main Library. On this podcast, we talk about the band's break-up and her latest projects. Plus, we stream her performance of "8th of November," an old Wading Girl tune that she'll perform on Thursday.

Down by Downtown festival is early in planning stage

My column in print tomorrow features a few words about the Down by Downtown festival, which planners say will be based somewhat on Austin's South by Southwest fest. Here's what musician Cyrus Pace, one of the planners, had to say about the early details and philosophical intention behind the fest.

> The Down by Downtown festival will be the culminating event in a year long series of initiatives created by the Tolerance section of the recent Creative Connectors Program run by Stuart Mease and Roanoke City.  The overarching title for the year is STAR, The Spirit of Tolerance and Art in the Region.  It was our thought that the great art and music of our country has always held the sentiment necessary for true inclusion.  Black and white musicians were playing together long before they were allowed to stay in the same hotels.

Columns: Poor Sunday turnout for great band; more on Buster B. Jones

Here's this week's column, about a rough Sunday night for a great band. We've already got a good conversation going about this topic at http://blogs.roanoke.com/rtblogs/cutnscratch/2009/02/23/question-of-the-week-deadest-show-ever/, so jump over there and tell us about killer shows that didn't get the audience they deserved.

Here's another column, in which I revisit my news obit of phenomenal fingerpicking guitarist Buster B. Jones. I meant to post this link sooner, but other work just ate up my time.

A column emerges online

I came in this morning and saw that my column wasn't online. Here it is now.

Typically, I wouldn't worry too much about it, but I promised to post streaming audio of two cool songs -- My Radio's "Angel in the Choir," and Poe Mack and Jane L. Powell's collaboration on Mack's "My Dreams." Go check them out.

The Wright Kids Roanoke gigs

I was working late and couldn't make it out last night, but my friend Alison texted me with the news that The Wright Kids' crowd at the library's Emerging Artist Series show was standing room only. Next stop for the kids: Pop's Ice Cream and Soda Bar, on Saturday. Here's the column, with show details.

About this blog

cutNscratch is The Roanoke Times music blog. Music reporter Tad Dickens enjoys pickin' and grinnin' and drummin', and he likes to write about music, too. He'll post plenty about local, regional and national music, but it won't be any fun at all if you don't jump in and have your say. So do it! | Read more about Tad.
