Quote of the day: Robert G. Ingersoll on liberty
"What light is to the eyes--what air is to the lungs--what love is to the heart, liberty is to the soul of man."
Robert Green Ingersoll (1883-1899) was self-educated lawyer, a former Attorney General of Illinois, a leader in the Republican party, a Civil War veteran who fought for the Union and a noted orator on many subjects, including humanism and agnosticism. His radical (for the day) views on subjects such as women's rights and slavery caused him to forsake higher political office. Among the writers he influenced were Ambrose Bierce, William Faulkner, Sherwood Anderson and Sinclair Lewis.
