I have no taste

Some of my friends may look at my wardrobe and think, "You can say that again." But they would be caught misinterpreting me, because I'm really talking about the fact that I CAN'T TASTE ANYTHING!

Ahh, what wretched thing have I done to deserve this? I am now on day three of having no sense of taste due to a Category 5 head and chest cold that put me on the couch for two days straight. Was it the head cheese blog? Dear Lord, forgive me.

Every hot mug of tea I drink, every heavy squeeze of Rooster sauce I give my every meal is done in the hopes that some temporary clearing will occur, and the cloud will be lifted long enough for me to detect the cumin or the beef in my chili, the blueberry honey on my toast, the sunshine in that naval orange. By God, I would settle even for a hint of chickenness in my chicken soup.

Alas. Everything tastes almost exactly the same-- like nothing. True, the soup is a little salty. The honey is a little sweet. The old tongue is still able to distinguish between those most basic of characteristics. So why did I find the need to eat a peppermint patty when all it tasted like was sugar? Well, just to check again, of course. To see if I could taste it.

Until I am able to distinguish cilantro from parsley blindfolded, I won't dare discuss delicious flavors. I'll simply leave you all with a few bite-sized news nuggets, including a chance to get free Chick fil-A every Friday in March. Let me know how that chicken tastes.

* On Saturdays during March, chefs will be stopping in The Fresh Market to give in-store cooking demonstrations. Contact your Fresh Market for the exact schedule.

* Want to know why Americans are so fat? Check out this blog dedicated to some of the most ridiculously indulgent concoctions on Earth: This is why you're fat.

* Two local Chick-fil-A restaurants, the one at Valley View and the one up near Hunting Hills, are giving away free breakfast treats from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. every Friday in March. Here's the grub schedule: March 6, chicken breakfast biscuits; March 13, Chick-n-Minis (bite-sized Chick-fil-A Nuggets nestled in warm mini-yeast rolls); March 20, Cinnamon Clusters (little cinnamon pastries with vanilla icing); March 27, chicken biscuits again.

  1. Campbells chicken noodle soup with fresh garlic and hot peppers added. Wash it down with a Sudafed.

  3. I'm on day 7 of not being able to taste. I've gone out to eat but wonder why I waste the $$ when everything tastes the same. I'm trying to figure out causes lack of taste, I thought maybe the nasty hall's cough drops so I quit those but still have no taste.

  4. When I have a head cold I usually eat something really spicy - wasabi-coated nuts are the best - they'll clear the pressure up for a little while. And your taste will return for a short time!

  5. I've been sick for the past couple of days with an intestinal bug, and am very thankful I cooked a chicken for broth Sunday night. That broth will be my lunch today and supper tonight, with a little rice thrown in.

  6. I had the flu for two weeks this month. Couldn't taste a durn thing except pickles, sauerkraut, and pickled banana peppers. Make you some kraut and weiners/brats/spare ribs or make a big pot of 5-alarm chili. It will either help you or kill you.

  9. Hot and sour soup from a takeout place will usually clear up the crud. I think the vinegar does something.

  10. I have a friend that swears by hot and sour soup to clear the head and restore taste. Never tried it myself, but ya never know...

  11. Horsey sauce from Arby's on a small roast beef...it clears you up for a few minutes and if you can't taste that suace then your tongue is in hibernation. Not being able to taste the sensation of a York Peppermint Patty is just too much torture! Poor Lindsey!

  12. Speaking of peppermint patties, do you know that Hershey is closing the peppermint patty plant in PA and moving operations to Mexico. Guess I won't be buying those anymore. About 260 people are losing their jobs.

  13. I'm with Tami as to the hot & sour soup, but I have no clue if it is because of vinegar or not. That is my go-to feel-better soup when feeling under the weather & will definitely clear your head. Hopefully, also get your taste buds poppin' again, too. The best I've had came from Dragon China @ Cave Spring Corners, fyi. FEEL BETTER SOON!!!

  14. Wow, it's practically unanimous with the Hot 'n' Sour soup! Thanks for all the get-better wishes. I am starting to regain my sense of taste- yippee! Maybe I'll taste dinner tonight.
