Cookbook Giveaway!
I am positively overrun with cookbooks all of a sudden. So it seems like a good time to give away another book.
This time around, I'm choosing "Pizza on the Grill" by Elizabeth Karmel and Bob Blumer. The cover shot alone makes my tummy growl -- it shows a crispy-edged, cheesy wonder of a pizza topped with caramelized onions and cherry tomatoes and oozing cheese. From glancing through the book, I've determined that grilling pizzas must turn out some of the nicest, toastiest brown crusts.
This book covers everything from the basic pepperoni pie to dessert pizzas, such as the crave-inducing Cinn-O-Bun Pizza and one topped with caramelized pears, roasted walnuts and blue cheese.
Yum. Yum. Yum.
If you want this book, all you have to do is comment on this post. I don't mind if you talk about cooking pizza on the grill or if you just write in and say "MINE! ALL MINE!" I'm going to take all of the entries and toss them in a hat and draw the winner on Friday afternoon.

I've always wanted to try cooking pizza on the grill!

Pizza on the grill sounds delicious! The more things my husband can cook on the grill, the less things I have to cook in the kitchen!

That's a cookbook I do not have in my collection. I want it bad. Lindsey is no longer accepting any more post. Just kidding
Comment by Tim B — April 21, 2009 @ 11:26 am
I have not tried this method but I saw Sandra Lee do it on her tailgating show. Looks interesting. My first inclination was that the dough would fall through the grates before it was cooked - but I guess not! I'll have to try this - soon. I like mine topped with sauteed mushrooms, onions, red pepper and feta. Nothing beats it.

I would LOVE to have this cook book for the simple fact of encouraging Travis to do some cooking. We all know how boys love pizza... and how the only place they can do their cooking is the grill. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Comment by Sarah Hartge — April 21, 2009 @ 11:50 am
Well...I would like this cookbook because I can honestly say I have never had pizza cooked on a grill before but I keep seeing Bobby Flay do it on Food Network! My kids and I do make customized pizzas at home in the oven and it would be awesome to win this cookbook so that we can try something new!
Comment by KyAnne — April 21, 2009 @ 11:51 am
MINE! ALL MINE! this may encourage me to finally get a grill
Comment by Chris — April 21, 2009 @ 11:53 am

This post reminds me of a great pizza restaurant I tried out a few weeks ago. We drove out to the New River Gorge Bridge and decided to stop in Fayetteville, WV for lunch. There they have a wonderful place called "Pies and Pints". As the name suggests, it serves a large list of beer and the most amazing and creative pizzas I have ever had. We tried the Thai Shrimp pizza. It was a basic crust covered with grilled shrimp, curry sauce, toasted coconut, and fresh herbs sprinkled on top. YUM!!
Comment by Tricia — April 21, 2009 @ 12:04 pm
Yum! Me too!!
Comment by Sam — April 21, 2009 @ 12:36 pm
My Dad used to make homemade pizzas from a recipe he got from Yvonne Ferris (he called the recipe "an old family recipe from my Lebanese grandmother"; cracked her up!) when her family lived up the street from us (you interviewed her last year for the Lebanese festival, remember?). My dad was in a wheelchair from polio, so this was a great hobby for him. He would have flour all over the kitchen and himself, made the sauce from scratch, and made enough pizza to put several in the freezer. You can imagine how the kitchen (and him!) looked after an all-day pizza-making marathon, but those pizzas were dynamite!
Now give me that cookbook so I can pay homage to a great pizzamaker!!

OMG!!! Soooo delicious! Such a mouth-watering experience. You savor the moment. My co-worker grilled a frozen pizza last year, but just imagine the taste, and the aroma floating through the air of a billantly put together homemade pizza. Yes, again, OMG!!! I WANT THAT BOOK...PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE - Satisfy my craving!

Hi Lindsey. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE grilling pizza!! So simple & delicious. My husband and I have both come up with our creations & even put frozen pizzas on the grill when we've been lazy. Turns out so much better than in the oven. Sometimes around our house I wonder why we even have an oven because just about EVERYTHING is done on grill year round!

Mine, Mine....All Mine!!!
This would have been the perfect week for me to learn about grilling pizzas as my stove/range died on Sunday and the one I ordered won't be delivered until next week. I'm having to microwave, toaster oven and grill everything for a while and it is taking more creativity than I thought it would. I didn't realize how dependent I was on my stove..... On the upside...I am switching to a gas range and convection oven from an old electric piece of junk. YIPPEEE! A foodies dream!!!
Comment by Lisa — April 21, 2009 @ 5:45 pm
Lindsey...you need to check out that Pies and Pints and report back to us. I enjoyed pizza last night for supper, and there is nothing more delicious than brick-baked pizza.
Keep up the great work!

Comment by runwoolf — April 21, 2009 @ 6:15 pm
I would have to purchase a better grill to try pizza. My Char Broil from China won't even do hamburgers, But I'll bet I could do one in the Smokey Joe with alder or pecan wood.
Comment by Charles Thigpen — April 21, 2009 @ 7:06 pm
A friend of mine went to that Pies and Pints, she said it was awesome! GREAT beers, (she is a fellow beer connoisseur) and great pizza! I haven't been there but would surely stop by if in the area! I checked out the menu at http://www.piesandpints.net/ and some of those pizzas sound awesome!
I'd try pizza on the grill, have never done it, I wonder if it would work on a charcoal grill? I don't have a gas grill, may be hard to keep charcoal at a low enough temp. But if I win that cookbook I'll find out!!
Comment by Dennis — April 21, 2009 @ 7:34 pm

mmm, grilled pizza. : )
Comment by J chaborek — April 22, 2009 @ 4:02 am
I did a grilled pizza last summer and copied it from the appetizer menu at Annie Moores. I used tortillas - any flavor, tomato, basil whatever - and drizzled olive oil on them, then loaded them with pre-sauteed artichokes, various peppers and onions, broccoli and garlic, then sometimes goat cheese and always mozzarella. Stick this on a preheated grill for maybe 8 minutes (it's helpful to start with the tortilla on foil) and voila! the tortilla gets crispy and the cheese melts...yummy!

Something I've always wanted to try.

I'd love to have it so I can give it to my brother. He cooks on the grill all the time and his 2 preschool sons loooove pizza. It could be a family thing. They could help make the pizzas and then daddy could cook them.
Comment by Debbie — April 22, 2009 @ 11:48 am
I've never tried grilling pizza but we do make it from scratch at home. My favorite trick is brushing the pizza crust with sun-dried tomato oil (we buy them jarred and packed in oil to make the pizza sauce) and then sprinkling with Italian herbs and garlic salt, sometimes Parmesan cheese. This is done before putting the pizza in the oven. Or add whatever you like and have on hand - absolutely delicious! Good luck to all!

Pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease . . . I've done pizzas on the grill before with mixed results--I need a cookbook!! And I LOVE Bob Blumer (one of the co-authors)--check our his Surreal Gourmet cookbooks, if you haven't already. And the show he had on the Food Network, Glutton for Punishment, was hysterical! He entered a bunch of food and drink-related competitions--chile eating, pizza throwing, bartending, etc.

I love grilled pizza. I sort of "made up" my own simple recipe after I made some shredded pork bbq.
1. one flour tortilla (burrito size)
2. add shredded italian four cheese mix to cover the toritilla. (leave about 1/2" open around the edge.) I used Food Lion brand, and it's impotrant to put the cheese on first.
3. add shredded pork.
4. "drizzle" with the red sauce from the Brambleton Deli. A little goes a long way. (they will sell it to you by the pint or quart, but will not give you the recipe)
5. add more cheese
6. top with sliced black olives and sliced red onion.
7. place on the grill, cover and let the cheese get bubbley.
All my friends love it. Nice crisp crust too. I've also made this in the oven and it works just as well under the broiler.

I have cooked a lot of things on the grill, but I've never tried pizza. I just bought a new tank of propane for my gas grill and a bag of charcoal for my charcoal grill. This is a cookbook I would likely actually use.
If chosen.... I will provide pictures of my grilling adventures as soon as Finals are over at Tech!
