Bread Craft is coming downtown!
I have exciting news that I can finally spill! Bread Craft, the artisan bakery out on Peters Creek Road in Roanoke, is moving downtown to the former site of Milan Tobacconists next door to Frankie Rowland's Steakhouse.
The bad news is that Bread Craft will close the Peters Creek Road location on June 1 and there will be a period of time where you bread-heads will have to do without this particular bakery until they are ready to open downtown this summer. I believe they need to move their huge oven and get the former tobacco shop set up as a bakery, which ought to take a bit of work.
Fortunately, we have another good bakery, On the Rise, that is also downtown. And once Bread Craft opens, those of us who live, work or love to visit the heart of the city will be able to carb load to our little hearts' content! Alex Eliades, Bread Craft's owner and head baker, says they will expand their offerings to include sandwiches and drinks.
Check out their Web site or their Facebook page for updates on the move.
Just think, scones for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and kalamata olive bread for dinner... mmmm! What do you think of the move?

I am thrilled, a little concerned about parking, but happy to have them downtown. I am also a big fan of On the Rise and think there is enough business for both as their selections are quite different. Looking forward to having the best chocolate croissants this side of the Atlantic.

I've been thinking about almond croissants ever since I heard about this! I think downtown needs a second bakery, and I think the two offer different enough items that it will work out. Can't wait!

I hope that they are open more consistantly when they move downtown! I'm not out Peter's Creek Rd. way that often, but when I am I have looked at the Bread Craft store and have NEVER seen them open! So I haven't had any bread from them. I tell you this, they will have to be REALLY good if they are going to compete w/ On The Rise! That is the best bread on the planet! And the pizza and subs are to die for! And that's all I have to say about that...

Great news about a new bakery downtown. This past summer an out of town guest and myself visited "On The Rise" bakery on The Market and it seemed like they were out of everything. I would estimate they turn away so many people. I told my friend another bakery would be a great idea! Now if we could get an expansion of that new Asian noodle place at Jefferson and Campbell into a much larger spot we would be very happy!

Parking could be an issue. We'll see how it goes.
Bread Craft has some out of this world concoctions, but the scones are not among them. Too cakey.
You can continue to buy many of your favorite Bread Craft products via retail at Ukrops, Tinnel's and other vendors of good groceries.
As for bakeries running out of stuff... get there early. They can't afford to have left over baked goods. They'll lose money.

Any word on when they will be opening?

The last I heard it would be in August. So it's August now. I need to check in with the owner.

Awesome. A bakery downtown that is open Mondays and opens before 9 am with sweets and will get my dollar without a second thought.
