In response to Linda's comments about Leeanna winning the cookbook. I am her husband and the scout master you speak of. With your proclaimed 30 years with the boy scouts you should know we do different types of camping. We do backpacking trips on the A.T. where we carry all of our cooking equipment on our backs, and no we don't carry dutch ovens. We also do campouts where we take the vehicle and trailer to the campsite, such as council and district camporees, summer camp, etc, these are the campouts were we use the dutch ovens. I feel teaching the scouts dutch oven cooking is just another skill they learn while camping, in addition to cooking with backpacking stoves, open fires, camp stoves, etc. I can assure you that if any of our scouts were lost in the woods they would know how to survive without finding your mentioned "pre fabricated dutch ovens". The cookbook will get lots of use, as will our backpacks and stoves... who knows, they may even be able to bake a cake in a cardboard box, fry an egg in a orange peel, fry hamburgers on a rock, the sky's the limit....

too bad you missed the entry that wanted to contiune to pass the book on to more scouts than just one troop ... i was a favorite of the scouts entrys but i think it would have better served them by being past on to the scout master not just 1 mom that carrys dutch ovens with her... the scout learning how to build the open fire to cook on is the fun part, how often do people really go camping and carry their dutch ovens??? in 30 years of scouting i never let the scouts bring pre done things i tought them to do it them selves... i hope if those troops are ever lost in the woods they come across, a pre fabricated dutch oven. i agree pulling a name from the hat is best i think you made a good choice but not the best on this one.

thanks,
