Quiz answers!

For those of you who had the opportunity to take the fun culinary quiz I posted yesterday, the answers are below the jump. I put them there on purpose in case others of you would still like to take the quiz and don't want the answers spoiled for you.

I wish I could report my own score on this quiz, but while completing it I noticed that I was a full three answers short. As it turns out, the wire story was missing three answers, so I had to call the Kansas City Star and get the missing answers. Well, that threw me all out of whack. But the best I can tell is that I got about 22 or 23 correct out of the 25. I did not know halloumi or cavolo nero.

I hope everybody had fun and learned something along the way!

  1. I mixed up aioli and remoulade and sashimi and hamachi. I had never heard of cavolo nero or halloumi, but I guessed and got them right. Halloumi sounded like a Greek word to me, so I picked it for the cheese. Cavolo nero and the dark cabbage were the only ones left to match, so.....:-)

  2. I got six wrong!

I thought I would do a little better, I should've gotten remoulade, but I got it confused with roulade. And I had initially guessed right on Pomme dauphin, but then changed it. D'oh!

It was fun, thanks for the quiz.

  3. The only reason I knew pommes dauphin is because I took three years of French in high school and one of the few words I still recognize is the word for potato. Does that say something about my Irish heritage?
My father reports that he got a perfect score on the quiz. Of course, nobody was there to witness this... nah, I believe you, Dad.

  4. I failed miserably by missing 10 but then I don't really cook so maybe missing 10 isn't too bad! Coworker Anna missed 6 and coworker Ken missed 2. Ken complains that the two he missed (#6 and #11) were trick answers!

  5. I got them all right! Woo hoo, happy dance. I do admit that two were a lucky guess (halloumi and cavolo nero).

Really I think this just means I watch too much food television. I would not have known tostones (plantains are not my favorites) if it wasn't part of the final elimination challenge on the last season of Top Chef filmed in Puerto Rico.

  6. I knew pommes dauphin b/c of Top Chef and I knew Cavolo nero was Italian not Greek. Good job Nona! I knew tostones from Top Chef too.
