UVa Insider, the column: Overstocking

With no new Virginia men's basketball commitments expected prior to signing day Nov. 12, it occurred to me that UVa coach Dave Leitao might have altered his approach.

Virginia currently has the maximum number of players on scholarship, 13. Two of those scholarship players are in their final season of eligibility, Tunji Soroye and Mamadi Diane, and the Cavaliers have commitments from two players who will take their place, Jontel Evans and Tristan Spurlock.

Senior cornerback is the only Virginia Tech player listed on NFL Draft guru Mel Kiper Jr.'s latest "Top Five" list among seniors for next April's draft.

On his regular Thursday teleconference, Virginia football coach Al Groh was asked about fullback Rashawn Jackson, arrested Tuesday on felony counts of grand larcey and breaking and entering stemming from a November 2007 incident at UVa's Cauthen Dorm.

UVa fullback arrested

Rashawn Jackson, No. 1 fullback for Virginia's football team, was arrested Tuesday and charged with one count of grand larceny and one count of breaking and entering in connection with an incident Nov. 22, 2007.

Jackson was scheduled for a hearing Wednesday in Albemarle County General District that was continued. He is scheduled back in court Nov. 20, two days before the Cavaliers' final home game against Clemson.

Jackson, a fourth-year junior from Jersey City, N.J., does not start for the Cavaliers because they invariably open games without a fullback, has 15 rushing attempts but has been used mostly as a receiver in recent games.

Virginia has not made a comment on his status.

This could be Glennon's break

So who's going to be Virginia Tech's quarterback a week from Thursday against 25th-ranked Maryland in Lane Stadium?

Starter Tyrod Taylor and backup Sean Glennon both suffered left ankle injuries in last Saturday's 30-20 loss at Florida State, and head athletic trainer Mike Goforth said Monday that each is questionable to play against the Terps. Both are still wearing protective boots on their lower left legs, and will miss Tuesday's and Wednesday's practices.
