No Neil Diamond playing here

Virginia Tech goes to Boston College on Saturday night for a key ACC game.

In their last trip to Beantown in 2006, the Hokies were pummeled 22-3 by the Eagles. The game still ranks as Tech's only ACC road loss in its four-plus years in the league.

When asked what he recalled from that forgetful night in which his players argued on the sideline and committed some bad personal fouls, Beamer paused Tuesday for a couple of seconds and responded with a grin.

"Oh, I remember them singing ‘Sweet Caroline’ or whatever the name of it was ... screaming ... they got some big plays on us," Beamer said. "We didn’t stay together real well as a football team ... and they were good.

I think it was a learning experience. I don’t think you can go up to Boston College and beat a really good football team like they are, a well-coached football team unless you’re all together. Everybody has got to hang in there together and be together. It can’t be any other way, it's got to be a great team effort to get this crowd."

Back to Neil Diamond's 1970s hit song, though. It's a staple at BC and Boston Red Sox games.

"I always liked that song before that night," Beamer said. But after that night I didn’t like it so well."
