Beamer talks Duke and what happened at Miami

DUKE-TECH WEEK MONDAY CALL
Here's a transcript of Frank Beamer's weekly Monday teleconference that concluded about 40 minutes ago:

OPENING COMMENTS
I'm really impressed with this Duke football team. Defensively, juniors and seniors over there, I think like seven seniors start for them and the rest are juniors. Offensively, got some weapons. The Riley kid is excellent. Dangerous football team ... I think a good football team. Had some big wins against Virginia and Vanderbilt and they were leading Miami 17-7 ... they're just a very dangerous football team.
Quarterbacks ... both Glennon and Taylor are healthy. Won't have anything more to say about that situation this week.

WHEN LOOK AT THIRD QUARTERS OF PAST FEW GAMES THAT HAS BEEN PARTICULARLY TROUBLING SPOT, THINK YOU'VE BEEN OUTSCORED 30-3 IN PAST THREE GAMES, ANYTHING YOU'RE SEEING IN TERMS OF LACKADAISCAL COMING OUT OF LOCKER ROOM OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT?
Naw, I don't think that's it. I just think we got ourselves in trouble. They drove the ball on us a little bit. We got ourselves in some trouble with the kickoff returns. We couldn't pick up a first down and that kinda was the story. They did a good job and we didn't do so well.

FROM WATCHING FILM FROM THIS YEAR AND LAST YEAR, WHAT HAS DAVID CUTCLIFFE BROUGHT TO THE DUKE PROGRAM THAT HAS HELPED THEM IMPROVE?
I don't think there's any question he's a very, very good football coach ... very, very sound. But they're playing with a lot of veteran guys. I think Ted [Roof] probably did a good job of recruiting there and now these guys are older. Defensively, they get after you. They've got a couple of guys ... No. 3, he's a good player ... No. 34, he's a good player ... No. 31, he's a good player ... they're good players and there's no question that Dave has done a good job with the organization and getting them playing hard and playing well.

THE ACC HAS TAKEN BUNCH OF HITS THIS YEAR, PEOPLE SAYING IT'S SO WIDE OPEN, SOME LOOK AT IT AS 12 MEDIOCRE TEAMS, OTHERS THINK IT'S JUST YOUNG TEAMS, JUST REAL COMPETITIVE, WHAT'S YOUR SENSE IS WHERE THE ACC IS THIS YEAR?
I think it's competitive for sure. I think for the most part, and I don't even know what the records are, we've held our own against outside competition. I think it's just a league that has got a lot of teams that are very close and very competitive.

OBVIOUSLY, YOU WOULD HAVE LIKED TO HAVE WRAPPED UP COASTAL BY NOW, BUT IS IT EXCITING FOR COACHES TO SEE SO MANY TEAMS STILL IN THE MIX AT THIS POINT OF SEASON?
Oh, I think it's good for the ACC, there's no question. A lot of people have got an opportunity and it makes the games this weekend critically important. They were important last week and then they get critically important this week.

DID THE PLAYERS HAVE THE WEEKEND OFF?
Yeah, we came back and the coaches came in and got things graded on Friday. We start back today with the regular week.

DID BUD GIVE YOU ANY KIND OF REPORT ON HOW IT WENT AT CLEMSON?
I think it was a good interview.

YOU GUYS HAD TO BE LITTLE ENCOURAGED BY MARYLAND'S WIN OVER NORTH CAROLINA ON SATURDAY, KNOW YOU'VE GOT TO PREPARE FOR DUKE, BUT THERE'S A GAME -- MIAMI AT GEORGIA TECH -- ON THURSDAY THAT'S GOING TO BE BIG AS FAR AS WINNING DIVISION

Yeah, I think if Georgia Tech should win and then if we all stay tied that puts us back in. I think the thing we've got to do: You can't get carried away with things you can't control, we'd better go practice hard and get ready to play a really good Duke football team. That's the only thing we can control.

YOU DIDN'T HAPPEN TO E-MAIL RALPH OR ANYTHING AND SAY THANKS A LOT FOR WHAT HE DID SATURDAY?
They played well. I watched lot of the game and I thought they really ran the ball well in some bad weather and was well prepared, offensively and defensively.

OF COURSE, YOU DON'T DO LOT OF E-MAILING, DO YOU?
(Laughs) I don't even know where to start.

HOW DID YOU COME OUT OF GAME INJURY-WISE?
Yeah, everybody seemed to be OK. We came out of it OK.

IN GENERAL, LOT OF ROAD GAMES IN PAST MONTH, HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO COME BACK HOME?
Ah ... we just haven't played much in front of the home folks. Hopefully, those fans can help us on Saturday. We need their help again and try to get this game won Saturday.

COMMENT ON OFFENSIVE LINE, DID YOU EXPECT THAT UNIT TO BE FURTHER ALONG AFTER 10 GAMES?
Well, I think you look at it the other day and we were on the right people for the most part, we just lost some battles. And when you lose a battle upfront, the whole play looks bad. That's kinda the story for us. I was hoping we could get them blocked better more consistently. And that's the key to it, consistenly getting them blocked. I think they're good kids who will continue to work hard and we'll continue to improve.

ON OUTSIDE LOOKING IN, LOOKS LIKE ONE GUY WHO YOU CAN COUNT ON TO BE A PLAYMAKER FOR YOUR OFFENSE AND THAT'S TYROD TAYLOR ... HOW COME OTHER GUYS AREN'T STEPPING UP?
Well, I think they have. I think our receivers made some plays against Maryland and Evans made some plays, we've just got to consistently be good and that's what we're working for.

SPEAKING OF RECEIVERS, THE CATCH BOYKIN MADE, HAVE YOU SEEN MANY BETTER THAN THAT ONE IN YOUR DAYS AT TECH?
That was a great catch. And you see them continue to get better. He gets better and better. Dyrell would like to have that one he had, the one he dropped, he would like to have that one back for sure. We've just got to hang with them and they'll get better.

TAKE FOOTBALL AND HAVE IMPRESSIVE DRIVE RIGHT DOWN FIELD ... THAT'S LIKE THE FOURTH TIME THIS YEAR YOU GUYS COULDN'T CONVERT ON A FOURTH-AND-1 IN A BIG SPOT OF GAMES ... HOW PROBLEMATIC IS THAT, THAT SERIES COULD HAVE SET TONE FOR GAME?
We needed to set a tone right there. It all got back to the tight end didn't get off on the ball. I asked him this morning and he said he couldn't hear, couldn't hear the cadeance so. We've got to talk louder and hear and get off on the snap, particularly on a short-yardage situation. You can't let them get a jump on us. The guy got into a hole that we were trying to run in and everything got stopped after that.

WITH BOTH QUARTERBACKS BACK HEALTHY NOW IS THERE A CONSIDERATION TO MOVE CORY HOLT BACK TO RECEIVER?
Yeah, we're going to get Cory some work at receiver this week.

  1. With coach's opening comment, should we be expecting another loss to a mediocre ACC team? Yikes! I'd prefer to hear that we're going to rip the heads off that #$%^& Dook crowd!

  2. VT is very lucky to be in the chase to go to the championship game. I wish the Hokies all the best. I have for over 40 years and I am not going to quit.I am a Legacy Society member and that should tell you how I feel about Virginia Tech. VT needs to win these last two games and win a bowl game and follow it up with a strong season next year. This is very, very important. Other league teams are getting better and we need to get and stay strong. We have to win the league championship before we can do anything nationally, which is what we all want, but it starts with winning the league championship, now and next year. It is very important to get this going now and keep it going. GO HOKIES!!!
