UVa beats South Florida

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Freshman Sylven Landesberg’s layup with 13.9 seconds left forced the 19th and last lead change of the night Wednesday as UVa held on for a 77-75 victory over South Florida at John Paul Jones Arena.
Landesberg, named ACC rookie of the week after scoring 28 points against VMI, hit eight of 15 shots from the floor and finished with a team-high 21 points. Dominic Jones, who missed two shots in the final eight seconds, had 23 points for USF.

Virginia, which entertains Radford on Friday, improved its record to 2-0. South Florida is 1-1.

  2. Am I alone in feeling that Dave Leito struggles to identify who his best players really are? The starting line up last night is difficult to understand as well as the decision to go with Baker the last 5 minutes of the game.

  3. Following the post-game interviews, the first thing I write is the game story. When the game story has been transmitted successfully to the office, I write a short blog that has the final score and a couple of facts about the game. That is posted immediately.

Morgan, if you read the blog at 8:28 a.m., the longer, print version also should have been on line at that time. Are you saying that you only saw the abridged version or that you saw no story at all?

  4. Joe,

I think most of the reporters thought that Zeglinski had played better than Baker prior to the point, with 6:32 left, when Baker picked up his third foul.

I'd have to go back through my notes, but I think Leitao left the impression that Baker was the better defender. Obviously, if Virginia had lost, Baker's two missed free throws would have been huge.

I think you can see, with the six and five minutes that starters Jerome Meyinsse and Mustapha Farrakhan played, respectively, that Leitao is still experimenting.

I would bet that they have practiced well. That's why they started. But practice performance and game performance are two different things, which is why you see coaches use a lot of lineups that game performance doesn't justify.

If you don't reward practice performance, then nobody puts out.
