Liberty upsets UVa
CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Liberty University freshman Seth Curry, overlooked by college basketball's major conferences despite a sparkling pedigree, scored 26 points Tuesday night as the Flames handed Virginia its first loss of the season.
Liberty (2-1) hit 13 of 26 3-point attempts and shot 69.6 percent in the second half against a UVa team that continues to play atrocious defense.
Virginia (3-1) hit 10 3-pointers in the second half but led only briefly in the second half, at 44-43 and 59-57, against a Flames team that had dropped a 26-point decision one week earlier at UNC-Asheville.
Redshirt freshman guard Sammy Zeglinksi, who was scoreless in the first half, hit six 3-pointers in the second half and finished with a game-high 24 points for Virginia.
The Flames became the first Big South team to beat Virginia in 17 games dating back to the 1998 season, when Liberty defeated the Cavaliers 69-64 at University Hall. That loss was considered the low point in the tenure of ex-Virginia coach Jeff Jones, who was fired after the 1997-1998 season.

Looks like Leitao's defense is still offensive. I can't believe how many layups and uncontested three-pointers this team gives up to Southern Conference teams!!!
Guess we couldn't even win that league.

1.Should all of the ACC coaches take pay cuts for not signing Seth Curry?
2.Would Ed Davis be chosen ahead of Tyler Hansbrough in the NBA draft if he declared this year?
3.Is there anything about Sammy Zeglinski that really says "point guard"?

“ We want, and expect, to attack both the defense and the field of play in a concerted, aggressive approach. We want to be able to use schemes and formations that utilize our talents while placing pressure on the opponent to adjust and defend. Our goal is to set the tempo of the game and dictate the style of play that is indicative of Virginia Tech football. ”- Bryan Stinespring

the football and the basketball coaches at uva should be released of thier contracts without pay . this situation atuva has gotten out of control with c. littleoage as atheletic director. no contract should be renewed for next year . million of dollars wasted on with no improvement in sight. i have been a uva fan for 40 years but i cannot see any improvements with these two coaches.

What the hey! If you put some longtime UVA fans in a room, and I am one of them, I'm sure you will find a lot of grey haired or bald people. I've said this since I can remember. UVA basketball and football is cursed. The saying is true, "There is nothing new under the sun". Liberty University should never beat UVA. I was there at that game 10 years ago during Jeff Jones last season, and am wondering what would have been if Melvin Whittaker never pulled out that darn box cutter. But now we stand here 11 or 12 years later and have had one good season and a semi-good season to count for. Heartbreak has happened in both sports and when will it ever end? I don't care who we have as coach, the same will happen. We could have brought in (Submit any top hoops coach), and Virginia would still not win. I will always be a die-hard fan, and I am beginning to wonder if I ever want to see them make a national championship game, because I know that my heart will break once again when they lose. Forget the big game, UVA is probably 10% winners, no make that 1% winners in those games. You say nah. What about Texas Tech, UNC, Ga Tech, and this year alone, Miami, Wake Forest, and Clemson in football. Basketball? Let me think..... NC State, Clemson, Miami, Gonzaga, Tennessee, Chaminade. If you're a true fan you know what games I am talking about. Games that could have turned the tide, or maybe even allowed UVA to have a great season. I could argue that UVA fans are some of the most frustrated fans in the country. I give up on this response because I am getting more frustrated as I write. So UVA please wake up! When will you get a championship mentality. Hey, isn't UVA an academic school? You would have thought by now the players would figure out how to play defense in basketball and how to not turn the ball over in Football. Book smart makes you look sport dumb on the field or court. Frustrated? YES! That is why I am always a UVA fan! The two go hand in hand.

PS! It's the BIG SOUTH conference Brian. Not the Southern Conference. It's like me calling the Big East, Eastern Bigger.

Fraze,
I've been told that Pete Gillen's $2-million buyout came in a lump sum.

Brian,
The Liberty 3-pointers late in the game were mostly contested but it was shocking how often the Liberty guards -- they were all guards -- beat much more highly recruited UVa athletes off the dribble.
