More on Vic Hall

If Virginia cornerback Vic Hall has gotten some work at quarterback in practice this week, it wouldn't be the first time.

"Actually, we first began to acquaint Vic with some rudimentary phases of the offense back before the Connecticut game, when we were only going to have two quarterbacks," said Groh in a Thursday teleconference.

"If there was ever a circumstance in the previous games where we'd been down to the third quarterback, then he probably could have gone in and run two or three plays."

Before tailback Mikell Simpson was injured in Virginia's ninth game, he occasionally took direct snaps out of a formation that has grown in popularity in college and even the pros. There has been speculation this week that Hall, a former star quarterback at Gretna High School, could make an appearance Saturday at Virginia Tech.

"Mikell was very well-suited for it, so we just kind of went with him," Groh said. "He was the guy in our thoughts for that and it didn't go beyond that once he was hurt."

Simpson did not attempt any passes.

  1. I HAVE WATCHED VIC HALL PLAY IN A LARGE NUMBER OF FOOTBALL GAMES AT GRETNA . I LIVE IN HURT VA. ONLY 10 MILES NORTH OF GRETNA. HE WAS A GREAT PLAYER FOR THE HAWKS. A GREAT QUARTERBACK WHO WOULD HAVE HELPED UVA ON OFFENSE. HAS EXCELLENT SKILL AND AVERAGE SPEED. HE NEVER PLAYED DEFENSE AT GRETNA. THIS WAS A MISTAKE BY GROH IN NOT USING VIC ON OFFENSE . GROH MUST GO...

  3. I saw Hall play for Gretna High also. Questionable level of competition. Fantastic player, but note that the Gretna High program has been every bit as good there after he graduated. The jury is still out as to how good a passer he could be at the collegiate level. Unreal high school player, and I was thrilled to have him come to UVa!!!!!!!

  4. Al Groh has been thinking about using Vic Hall as a passer for years, but I don't know how long he'd been thinking about using Hall as a QB.

I remember at a practice 2 years ago watching Hall throwing passes in a fake field goal attempt.

  7. I watched Vic play at Gretna his whole career there. There was no questionable level of competition, every team was the same if not a higher ranking. He is the best player I have ever seen and Al Groh should be kicked in his a_ _ for not puting him at QB from the start.Theres no doubt how good he is after his performance against Va Tech one of the top rated defenses in college football. We shall see some real talent if he starts at QB.Oh and he has a hell of an arm also.
