Hokies prevail

A 28-yard field goal by Dustin Keys with 6:37 remaining Saturday lifted Virginia Tech to a 17-14 victory over Virginia and  sent the Hokies into next Saturday's ACC championship game.

The Hokies (8-4 overall, 5-3 ACC) will meet the winner of tonight's game between Maryland and Boston College.

Sophomore quarterback Tyrod Taylor carried 16 times for 137 yards and one touchdown, and he set up a game-tying third-quarter touchdown with a 73-yard run.

Virginia, which lost its fourth game in a row, ended the season at 5-7 overall and 3-5 in the ACC. UVa has lost five straight games to the Hokies.

Vic Hall, who had started 24 consecutive games at cornerback, started at quarterback for Virginia and scored on touchdown runs of 40 and 16 yards.

  1. VT will play BC, if BC wins tonight. VT will play FSU if BC loses tonight. MARYLAND is out of the championship game....

  2. Correction: Hokies only play the winner of BC-MD if that winner is BC. If Md wins, we play FSU.

  3. To all concerned,

My wife has already advised me of my error, but at least I had the BC winning right.

  6. Moash,

Check out some of the scores this weekend:

    Oregon 65, Oregon State 35

    Oklahoma 61, Oklahoma State 41

    Georgia Tech 45, Georgia 42

The Virginia teams just don't get it, but at least the Hokies win

  7. What do you mean by saying "The Virginia teams just don't get it, but at least the Hokies win"? Explain this better and you will get answers from fans of both schools. You started something with that comment, explain it, then wait and see what happens.

  8. If you feel the teams don't get it, than please do us a favor and move to a state and cover a team that you think does get it, because your blogs, reporting, and cheesy weekly video with Randy are so cliche' for a no-name newspaper that nobody cares about.

  9. compare our record to any of those programs save Oklahoma, I think one Virginia program gets it just fine Doug

  10. Frank, he means that the Virginia teams don't get that college football is moving to a more offensive-based game. The "three yards and a cloud of dust" and the "let the offense just not lose it for ya" train has left the station, and both schools need to pick it up on O.

  11. I think it might have something to do with VT's stellar defense and rather anemic offense. GT did not score 45 against VT and VT has not given up over 30 points in a game for the entire season. So it's not the prettiest way to win games, but the Hokies are still doing work and I think it has little reflection on the state of Virginia football. In fact, both UVA and VT beat Georgia Tech this year! W's matter more than points, even in the BCS. Unless you meant to say that the Virginia teams just don't get the points I have to disagree.

  12. Frank,

Obviously, the Cavaliers and Hokies are offensively-challenged.

Take Virginia: In three of its last four games, UVa allowed 17 points or less in regulation and lost all three.

The trend in college football suggests that you win with offense. Tech won with defense this year but the Hokies fans I know would agree that the offense needs to pick up over the long haul.

  13. Thank you, that is what I thought that you meant. There was no ill intent in this, it is exactly what I thought your point was.Thank you for your answer. You are a good reporter, I enjoy reading your articles. I have subscribed to this paper for over 30 years and I live far away from Roanoke. By the way, I agree about the Tech offense.
