Ex-UVa quarterback thriving
Ex-Virginia quarterback Kevin McCabe completed 22 of 29 passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns Saturday to lead California University of Pennsylvania to a 27-24 victory over Bloomsburg and a spot in the Division II national semifinals.
For the year, McCabe has passed for 3,043 yards and 31 touchdowns, compared to seven interceptions.
One week after throwing an overtime touchdown pass in UVa's 13-12 victory over Wyoming in 2006, McCabe was told "you're done" by Cavaliers' offensive coordinator Mike Groh after yielding a first-half interception one week later against Western Michigan.
McCabe never played for the Cavaliers again. He elected to remain in school and gain his degree in December 2007, after which he transferred to Cal. U.

Maybe we should tell Mike G. that he's done.

In defense of Mike Groh, Kevin McCabe looked horrible in the brief amount of time that he played at UVa. I don't blame Mike Groh for getting rid of McCabe. And the level of competition that California University of Pennsylvania plays against isn't very good, is it? Good follow-up on what McCabe is up to, though.

McCabe was Rivals #5 QB nationally when we signed him. He was given less than one quarter of play on the field to prove himself and in that time he led us to a TD and threw an interception. If you believe that is adequate opportunity to prove or disprove a player's worth, then so be it.
The next year, Mike Groh selected Scott Deke, a Californian, over Sean Glennon, the #1 recruit in Virginia. Deke has played only as a holder for extra points since his arrival while Glennon has been the MVP of the ACC Championship game.
Two years ago, Mike Groh selected Peter Lalich over Russell Wilson. Lalich has been dismissed from UVA, while Wilson has been named first team all conference.
Vic Hall, the all-time career yardage leader for Virginia HS Qbs, has been banished to the defense for four years until the recent game in Blacksburg, when we got a real taste of what we've been missing on our offense.
I think that we have enough evidence that Mike Groh's evaluation and decision-making skills are inadequate. If anyone other than his dad was HC, the comment "you're done" would be made to him.

Mike Groh has not made particularly astute decisions when it comes to recruiting or being offensive coordinator. I am fairly certain that were he not the coaches son, or if he worked for a team other than UVA he would not currently be in his current capacity. By the way, Groh's one voice policy is ridiculous. It doesn't help UVA's image at all. Geez when is UVA going to wake up and smell the roses and get rid of him?
