Liberty upsets UVa

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Liberty University freshman Seth Curry, overlooked by college basketball's major conferences despite a sparkling pedigree, scored 26 points Tuesday night as the Flames handed Virginia its first loss of the season.

Liberty (2-1) hit 13 of 26 3-point attempts and shot 69.6 percent in the second half against a UVa team that continues to play atrocious defense.

Virginia (3-1) hit 10 3-pointers in the second half but led only briefly in the second half, at 44-43 and 59-57, against a Flames team that had dropped a 26-point decision one week earlier at UNC-Asheville.

Redshirt freshman guard Sammy Zeglinksi, who was scoreless in the first half, hit six 3-pointers in the second half and finished with a game-high 24 points for Virginia.

The Flames became the first Big South team to beat Virginia in 17 games dating back to the 1998 season, when Liberty defeated the Cavaliers 69-64 at University Hall. That loss was considered the low point in the tenure of ex-Virginia coach Jeff Jones, who was fired after the 1997-1998 season.

UVa lacrosse co-captain found dead

Former Virginia lacrosse player Will Barrow died Saturday, Mike Colley of the UVa sports media relations department confirmed Sunday on football coach Al Groh's conference call with reporters.

Barrow was found Saturday morning at his Charlottesville apartment, according to Charlottesville TV station Channel 29. On its website, Channel 29 said police are conducting an investigation but do not believe foul play was involved.

Barrow, co-captain of the 2008 UVa men's lacrosse team that reached the NCAA semifinals, was the 11th player selected in the Major League Lacrosse draft.

Hokies favored by 10 over Wahoos

The opening betting line out of Las Vegas has Virginia Tech listed as a 10-point favorite over Virginia in Saturday's noon clash at Lane Stadium.

Tech (7-4, 4-3) can claim the ACC's Coastal Division title with a victory over UVa (5-6, 3-4). If the Hokies lose, Georgia Tech captures the division crown.

Bud Foster and UVa

Just saw this e-mail from "Moash" at the bottom of a Randy King post on Bud Foster:

nine years ago al groh promised the uva faithful a national championship.
he has been given everything he needs to get it done, but has failed to produce one. let alone an acc one. following todays game with clemson, it is now easier to see, that it is time for al groh to GO. maybe bud might be the man for the job. Read more »

UVa-Clemson final thought

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- One Virginia football player came off better than any other in a 13-3 Cavaliers' loss to Clemson on Saturday.

Actually, it wasn't an active Virginia player, but suspended quarterback Jameel Sewell was starting to look a lot better after Marc Verica was intercepted three times for the second game in a row. Read more »

Duke's starting QB won't play tonight

BLACKSBURG -- Duke will be without the services of its starting quarterback tonight against Virginia Tech.

Thaddeus Lewis, who suffered a sprained foot in the Blue Devils' loss at Clemson last week, came out in sweats and ran around a little bit on the field. But he didn't suit up and participate in pregrame warmups.

Junior Zack Asack will get the start for Duke.

By the way, there apparently will be plenty of empty seats for tonight's game. The majority of Tech's students have vacated campus with weekend marking the start of Thanksgiving break.

UVa-Clemson at the half

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Clemson capitalized on Virginia turnovers for a touchdown and a field goal and has a 10-3 lead over Virginia at the half.

The Cavaliers have held the Tigers to 135 yards but UVa's inept offense has accounted for only 98 yards. Read more »

Landesberg to rescue again

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Freshman Sylven Landesberg scored 10 points in the final 8:08, including the go-ahead free throws with 29 seconds left as Virginia held off Radford 68-66 at John Paul Jones Arena.

It was the second two-point victory in three nights for the Cavaliers, who defeated South Florida 77-75 on Wednesday. UVa (3-0) trailed in the final minute of both games.

Landesberg went over the 20-point mark for the third time, finishing with a game-high 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field. The rest of the Cavaliers were 15-for-50.

Artsiom Parakhouski, a 6-foot-11, 260-pound junior-college transfer, had 16 points and a team-high 12 rebounds for the Highlanders (2-1).

Hokies 2 home wins away from another Coastal title

So what the Hokies have lost three straight games on the road for the first time since 1997. They picked up an incredibly huge victory outside of Blacksburg on Thursday night, when Georgia Tech pounded Miami in ESPN's national telecast from Atlanta.

By the lieu of Georgia Tech's win over the 'Canes, the Hokies now can assure themselves of winning the ACC's Coastal Division for the third time in four years with wins in their final two games -- at home Saturday against Duke and on Nov. 29 vs. Virginia in Lane Stadium.

If Virginia Tech finishes 5-3 in the league and winds up in a three-way tie with Georgia Tech and Miami, the Hokies win because of their 4-1 division record.

If Tech finishes in a four-way tie with Miami, North Carolina and Georgia Tech, the Hokies and Tar Heels would be tied with 2-1 record against the foursome, and 'Canes and Yellow Jackets would be eliminated at 1-2. Since Virginia Tech beat UNC, the Hokies win.

Hard to believe, isn't it?

Well, nothing is a given in the ACC this season. Tech still has to win two games. Still, you've got to like the Hokies' chances. They are 17-point favorites to beat Duke, and will be strong favorites over UVa in the regular-season finale.

What a crazy year.
