Marshman, Warren expected to miss Orange Bowl

A pair of Virginia Tech senior starters -- left guard Nick Marshman and middle linebacker Brett Warren -- are not expected to play in the FedEx Orange Bowl against Cincinnati on Jan. 1.

Tech coach Frank Beamer is expected to make an announcement on both players' availabililty for the game at today's Media Bowl gathering in Blacksburg.

Marshman, a 6-foot-5, 339-pound fifth-year senior, has started the past 27 games for Tech. His place in the starting lineup would likely be filled by Jaymes Brooks, a redshirt freshman from Newport News. The 6-2, 304-pound Brooks played only four snaps in two games -- three against Furman and one against Boston College -- in the 12-game regular season.

Warren, a 6-1, 237-pound fifth-year senior, has started every game this season. He ranks second on the club in tackles (86), with five tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and two interceptions, including one for a touchdown.

Barquell Rivers, a 5-11, 229-pound redshirt freshman, was listed as Warren's backup on the depth chart for Tech's last game -- the Dec. 6 ACC Championship game win over Boston College. Rivers, however, has seen little action this season as his eight tackles suggest.

In a late-breaking development Friday night, redshirt junior running back Jahre Cheeseman has informed the coaching staff that he is leaving the program, according to BeamerBall.com.

Cheeseman, who was among the leading candidates at tailback in the fall, had only four carries for 21 yards this season. Cheeseman broke his left leg during spring practice and never was able to move up into the rotation before moving to fullback in midseason.

  1. Big news - this incredible article is just missing one small detail - WHY are they expected to miss the game? grades, injury, ...

  2. I hate to hear this for the seniors. Good luck in life after football.

    I almost forgot...fire Stinespring.

  3. So now Cheeseman is leaving VT. There goes another VT offense upperclassman. Stiney sure knows how to keep his players motivated and out of trouble -- (just like Ike Whitaker,, Luckett, MV2, Brandon Ore). Remember part of the reason we have so many FR/SO playing at the offensive skill positions is because they get kicked off the team for discipline/motivation problems thanks to Stiney's inability to mentor his players like Foster does. Just reason #150 why Stiney needs to be put on the unemployment line.

AD Weaver...next time you bring up an idea about a HCIW agreement for Foster (30 days ago) make sure you actually intend to consider it. To suddenly wake up yesterday and realize that we could have Beamer here another 8-10 years makes no sense.

You didn't realize this 30 days ago when you brought up the idea on national radio that Beamer could be here 8-12 years. FYI: Russian presidents don't even serve in terms of greater than 4 years. I know Beamer is the savior of the football program...but 8-12 years is a little extreme.

It leads me to believe that you just mentioned the HCIW agreement 30 days ago just as CYA for you because you believed Foster was going to get hired on at Clemson. You wanted to be able to tell Hokie fans that you were doing something to try to keep Foster in Tech.

So now we get to watch the 62 year-old and already haggard looking Beamer grow to the ripe old age of 74 in front of our eyes. Because he keeps an OC on his staff that is a bottom 10% performer (3 years running) we know that he is not serious about winning a NC. So our big drama over the next 12 years is to see if Beamer will have more wins than Tressel. Yawn! That sounds about as exciting as watching the Hokies winning another ACC Championship and then get beat in a BCS game.

Fire Stinespring! No CRONYISM at Tech!

  4. Since Richmond won a National Championship, do you think we can convince Beamer to send the trophy case to Richmond?

Especially since Beamer is not serious about filling our NC trophy case. And since Weaver said Beamer will be at Tech until he is 74 (12 more years of Mr. Magoo)we have no chance of getting a new innovative idea inside Beamer's stagnant staff (the one Coach Hite brags about with 89 years of experience together) to take VT to the next level.

Only 12 more years to go before Beamer heads fulltime to his Georgia lakehouse. (sigh)

Maybe we can be doubly fortunate...maybe we will also have 12 more years of AD Weaver (double sigh)

  5. My senior year at Tech was the year CFB was hired on the HC at Tech.

I was in the Superdome in January 2000 when the Hokies started the 4th Quarter with the lead against FSU for the national Championship. I was there and I know what that feeling feels like. We were that close!

And we have taken that momentum and sent it down the crapper. Thanks to CFB picking a OC with zero credentials. He picked one of his cronies and has allowed the problem known as Stiney to get bigger and bigger. He will not admit that he made a mistake and he is too stubborn to correct the problem. That is CRONYISM.

I see this steady stream of VT offensive players drafted to the NFL and say that something is "out of whack" on offense.

Am I missing something here? On one hand Weaver can say that Beamer
may be around for 12 more years but on the other cannot commit to a deal that far in the future for a HCIW.
How long is Frank Beamer's contract?
    Do coaches achieve tenure now?
If Tech is to go to the next level, Frank&Stine ( I refer to them as one since the appear to be joined at the hip) has to go. Jim Weaver
might as well tag along also. Tech football will never achieve legitimate
recognition as long as Weaver keeps scheduling ringers like Furman, Northeastern, Ohio and Kent State. Lets not forget James Madison and Florida A&M either.

As long as Frank Beamer is at Tech, the only thing that will go in that
case is a big Bass from Beamer's lake in Georgia.

  8. Hey Randy King,

Cheeseman transferring is not real relevant now since he is buried in the depth chart and likely would not see playing time anytime soon. How about finishing yesterday's article and tell us why 2 senior starters - Marshman and Warren are not expected to play in the Orange Bowl. Really...

  9. I HEAR WAHOO FANS ARE OFFERING BIG AL FOR BEAMER AND STINE.BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ASK FOR,YOU MIGHT GET IT! IF BEAMER LEAVES YOU MIGHT FIND OUT HOW ATTRACTIVE BLACKSBURG REALLY IS.

  10. Hokie81,

Cheeseman does matter as an upperclassman offensive player.
Imagine if we had someone who could develop those players to be better (and not be 5th stringers). You know like Foster does with his defensive players.

Just another negative trend on offense...

So now Cheeseman is leaving VT. There goes another VT offense
upperclassman in this short 2-year time period. Stiney sure knows how to keep his players motivated and out of trouble -- (just like Ike Whitaker, Luckett, MV2, Brandon Ore).

Task #1 of leadership: Motivate your troops.

Remember part of the reason we have so many Freshman/Sophomore
playing at the offensive skill positions is because they get kicked off the team for discipline/motivation problems thanks to Stiney's inability to mentor his players like Foster does.

  11. I don't agree with everything Coach Stinespring does as the OC. Sometimes the play calls mystify me. But, I also don't believe he was required to follow Whitaker and Luckett around and tell them not to drink. Was he supposed to follow Ore around to make sure he didn't get into a car where the driver had a bag of crack? Was he supposed to tail Marcus Vick and make sure he didn't get 15 year-old-girls drunk and be dumb enough to take pictures of them? Stiney can't be held responsible for ALL of VT's ills.

Tell me Coach Foster didn't have problems when Ronyell Whitaker, D'Angelo Hall and Jimmy Williams cost the Hokies games with their penchant for blatant personal fouls and me-first attitudes.

These are college age kids and no matter what a coach says to them, some of them are going to get into trouble. I don't like it anymore than the next guy, but the coaches can't follow these guys 24 - 7 and tuck them in every night. When a student gets to college he is responsible for his own actions.

  12. Hey "Hokie Nation or "James Salenger" which ever you prefer and don't deny it because you just about used word for word in your post, please do us all a favor take your act to another team and pull for them. Your act is getting down right nauseating. Because everytime you post you sound like the moron that you are proving to be. Well like I've said before JUST GO AWAY.

  13. Warren has a torn ACL in his right knee. Worilds' shoulder is still a problem, too. Both may be out or at least limited.

Marshman is academically ineligible- he has already graduated, but had to take 6 hours for the semester due to NCAA rules and apparently did not pass them.

Marshman's case is pretty embarrassing. I'm guessing he didn't sign up to take physics and calc courses for his 6 hours- how could you not pass a couple of filler classes after you had already gotten your degree? Sounds like a lack of focus and effort to me.

All of these constitute bad news for the Orange Bowl. Tech isn't exactly deep this year in those positions.

  14. Stinespring should be reassigned, not fired. Cheeseman did the right thing as he is talented but not THAT talented. James Salenger, I agree with cws260. JUST GO AWAY!!!!

  15. I think Cheeseman has seen the writing on the wall and decided if he wants playing time he had better transfer. I don't blame him or Stiney. He's couldn't beat out two redshirt freshmen all year and Ryan Williams will be playing next year as well. Jahre new the odds were against him. It's a matter of numbers. What we should do is to wish him the best of luck and root for him wherever he goes. He seems to be a good guy.

  16. Coach Foster was able to keep Ronyell Whitaker, D'Angelo Hall and Jimmy Williams focused enough to get them to the NFL.

Plus, read my post there Einstein (justafan)I specifically mentioned the offensive players released over the past two year time period -- (not going back 8 like you did).

  17. Several players have decided to leave Virginia Tech lately. Within the past year these players have dropped off the team: Bowman, Holland, Crum, Eric Davis, Welch, Garner, Ovens, and Cheeseman. The real reason for them not being on the team now is that they did not work out to be good enough to play for the Hokies. That is just a fact of the matter
statement. If part of their reasons for leaving the team was to find a place where they could get some playing time, then so be it. It is their life and the college years go by fast and if they wanted to play while they still had a chance, then good luck to them in their decisions. One question about the recruiting of players that do not work out to be players for Tech is, how much did the coaches know about these players before they were signed for Tech? Did the coaches know that some of the players were marginal recruits in the first place? If so, why were they recruited to begin with? Could the coaches not find players with better ability? Would players with better ability not sign with Tech? These are some questions that need to be studied and an answer decided for these questions? GO HOKIES!!!

  18. Sorry Hokie Nation, didn't mean to offend you. You are the one who is always comparing the great job Coach Foster is doing (and I totally agree with you) with the job Stiney has been doing for the last 7 years. Sorry to throw the extra year on there. Whitaker, Hall and even for one year Williams did make it to the NFL, but the fact is while they were in B'burg they were good players, but their attitudes did cost the Hokies a couple of games.

As far as transfers, it just a fact of life in college football, it happens everywhere. Some players are happy to be 3rd string, get their education and move on. Others want to play more often and you can't blame them for that, so they go elsewhere. In recruiting, it's often a crap shoot. Some guys peak at 18 and others don't until they hit their 20's. Six years ago the Hokies recruited two blue chip tailbacks, Brandon Ore and George Bell. Neither one made it to their senior year.

Greg Roberts' theory on recruiting often plays out true. One third of the recruits turn out to be good players, one third are average who play special teams and one third is hardly heard from again.

    Comment by Justafan — December 20, 2008 @ 11:04 pm

  19. The above mentioned theory probably explains a lot. It would be nice to have one recruiting class with many sure bet, top of the line recruits that turned out to be good players. We need top players to maintain our program or advance into higher levels of success with national rankings every year. What we have going for us is pretty good now, many teams would like to be as successful as we are. GO HOKIES!!!

  20. So now Stiney doesn't even have the situational awareness to know if his players are going to class and how they are doing academically. What type of relationship does he have with Marshman to know whether how he is doing in his classes? It seems like Stiney is a bottom 10% performer in his profession as OC and it seems like he is a bottom 10% performer in mentoring these kids to become better human beings.

Also Cheeseman is leaving VT. There goes another VT offense upperclassman. Stiney sure knows how to keep his players motivated and out of trouble -- (just like Ike Whitaker, Luckett, MV2, Brandon Ore). Remember part of the reason we have so many Freshman/Sophomore playing at the offensive skill positions is because they get kicked off the team for discipline/motivation problems thanks to Stiney's inability to mentor his players like Foster does.

Fire Stinespring! No CRONYISM at VT! Get rid of the bottom 10% performer (3 years in a row)

  21. Coach Foster finally breaks his silence on offensive woes in our last 2 VT bowl games. Excerpt below:

    ---------
But in a rare break from the win-as-a-team, lose-as-a-team mantra, defensive coordinator Bud Foster wants you to know his bunch was not part of the problem preparing for last season’s Orange Bowl against Kansas.

“We felt the last two years we’ve given the bowls away,” Foster said Saturday, referring to the Kansas loss and Chick-fil-A Bowl meltdown against Georgia in 2006. “I thought last year, and I told Coach Beamer this, we had our best bowl practices in all the time that I’ve been here as a defense.

“And I thought we played that way. They [Kansas] got a touchdown on a defensive score and they got a 2-yard drive. That was 14 of their 24 points, and that was against a team averaging 50 points going into the game.”

  22. The last two bowl games should have been won, all Tech fans know this and this is what hurts the most about the losses. We should have won the games. Kansas was an insult to lose to them. We had won 6 or 7 games against better teams than them. We must try hard to win this bowl game, for now and for the future. As for Nick Marshman, in the final say so on the matter, he is responsible for his own behavior and actions. He should have done better by the situation, in one sense of the matter it is hard to believe that something like this happened to a senior that had already graduated and is a young adult.
