Tech's Orion Martin and UVa's John Phillips in all-star games

Virginia Tech defensive end Orion Martin of Martinsville has been chosen to play in the East-West Shrine Bowl, while Virginia tight end John Phillips of Bath County has been selected to participate in the Senior Bowl.

Other players from the state invited to participate in the East-West Shrine contest are defensive lineman Lawrence Sidbury of I-AA national champion Richmond and defensive back Don Carey of Norfolk State.

Ex-VMI and Maryland coach Bobby Ross will coach the East squad, with former Alabama coach Gene Stallings handling the West team for the Jan. 17 contest at the University of Houston's Robertson Stadium.

Martin is one of eight players from ACC schools who received invitations. The rest of the list includes: Maryland offensive linemen Edwin Williams and Jaimie Thomas, Duke linebacker Michael Tauliili, Boston College linebacker Robert Francois, Florida State place-kicker Graham Gano, Clemson wide receiver Aaron Kelly, and Georgia Tech defensive lineman Darryl Richard.

In addition to Phillips, three other UVa players were extended invitations to play in the Jan. 24 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. Other Cavaliers selected included offensive lineman Eugene Monroe, linebacker Clint Sintim and running back Cedric Peerman.

Tech cornerback Macho Harris accepted an invitation last month to play in the 7 p.m. game that will be televised by the NFL Network.

Running back Rashad Jennings, who finished his career at Liberty after transferring from Pittsburgh, is one of five players from I-AA programs tabbed for the contest.

The UVa quartet and Harris are among 18 players from ACC schools who invited to the nation's premier all-star game for top senior performers.

The rest of the ACC list includes: Boston College defensive linemen B.J. Raji and Ron Brace; Clemson quarterback Cullen Harper, running back James Davis and defensive back Michael Hamlin; Georgia Tech defensive linemen Vance Walker and Michael Johnson; North Carolina wide receiver Brooks Foster; North Carolina State tight end Anthony Hill and running back Andre Brown; Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry, and defensive backs Alphonso Smith and Chip Vaughn.
