CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia athletics department has announced it will hold an event to welcome the Cavalier baseball team back from its appearance at the 2009 College World Series at 6 p.m. Thursday.
The event will be held at UVa’s Davenport Field and is free to the public.
Parking will be available at the University Hall parking lots beginning at 5 p.m.
The event is an opportunity for fans to congratulate the team on its outstanding 2009 season. Virginia made its first appearance in the College World Series and established a record for most wins in a season by a UVa baseball team. The Cavaliers also won the ACC Championship this year.
The 2009 team will be introduced and head coach Brian O’Connor will speak during the ceremonies. At the conclusion of the event, fans will be invited to come onto the field for autographs and to interact with the team.

Nice season. I never knew I could enjoy baseball so much.
Making it to the College World Series is another item added to the long list of things UVA athletics has accomplished that VT can only dream about.

Hay,Joe, I think our dream will be shorter than the hoos dream of an ACC football championship, or maybe you will continue to have nightmares about being passed by Duke in our division, Wow !!!!

Last time I checked the record books we do have an ACC Football championship. We also hold the distinction of being the only Division I football program in the state to ever be ranked number one in both the major polls.
For a football program that is so bad it sure has given the mighty Hokies all they could handle the last two years. Enjoy the VT football success you are currently having because history shows nothing good lasts forever.

How does Groh get away with offering scholarships to so many players with questionable academic backgrounds?- Remember the year when 1/3rd of his class didn't get in to school?
Virginia's baseball coach sure doesn't do anything like that.
Comment by Nelson — June 19, 2009 @ 12:50 am
Hey Nelson,
That was his first class and nobody had a problem with all the attention that came with it. I seriously doubt you were complaining either. BTW that class got pulled apart for a lot of reasons not just academics. Actually most of 'em just plain quit cause they were either homesick or had swelled heads and thought they deserved to be instant starters. It was a terrible class in regards of the intangibles, but no one including you I bet were thinking about that when they signed on LOI Day.
Get off Groh's back and give O'Connor his due. This is cheap and ridiculous and fans like you make it harder for Groh to do his thing. There's a lot of things to like about this years team how about you give the Groh bashing a rest for two more months.
The baseball team had a great year so be proud of them and imagine what can happen next year. Don't make it about anything else.

I think the Commonwealth needs to celebrate the fact that our Div 1 schools are successful in sports. Not many states can say they have an Orange Bowl Champion as well as a school that had it's baseball team in the CWS. I'm a Hokie, but I was rooting for UVA wednesday night. I want Tech to win anytime they are playing UVA but I like seeing UVA be successful when they aren't playing Tech. Joe, you shouldn't take a time to celebrate and immediately start comparing programs. It makes you get a tremendous amount of egg on your face. Tech's sells out both it's football and mens Basketball season tickets, I live outside of
Charlottesville and the commercials advertising tickets for UVA games are well in abundance. I think last year Techs girls softball made it to the CWS. I think what I am trying to say joe, is that both schools have positive programs, however imagine how successful your other programs could be if a few extra millions came in from winning bowl games. You shouldn't point point out that programs are better or the schools are better. Tech is a more Technical school and UVA is more a liberal arts school. That's great, Which graduates make more money? in some cases UVA and in some cases Tech. Who is more employable? sometimes Tech and sometimes UVA. But last but not least, which schools alumni love there school and will do whatever it can to help? Tech does win this hands down, and if your honest with yourself Joe you would say the same thing, Tech doesn't have to advertise to get it's family to come home, UVA does. Amen.

hey Joe, concerning the recent football games, close does not cut it, last I checked the Hokies have only lost once in last eight years to the boo hoos !!
Comment by Tony in Roanoke — June 19, 2009 @ 10:44 am
Hey Golfman2. The Barbers and Chris Long gave back to the football team, and Ryan Zimmerman gave $250,000 to the baseball team. What Hokie can you say did that for their team?? UVA doesn't have to advertise to get it's family to come home (And give money), it seems Tech does!
Amen!! and Amen!!

i would just like to say congratulations to the UVA baseball team, it was quite a ride. I really started getting into it deep in the acc tourney and by the time they got to Omaha I felt like i was living and dying with each pitch. There was plenty of oppurtunities to win that last game and i am not one to blame the umps or refs whichever it may be, but I felt Danny Hultzen should have drawn a walk off walk, the pitch wasn't close. Lookout for them next year

I enjoy the jabs between Tech and Hoo fans here. But I really enjoy telling coworkers who are big Tech fans that my University actually won a national title in football, and was the other Virginia school to get to the World Series for college baseball back in 1983.
GO Dukes of JMU!

Big difference between Hoo fans and Hokie fans. I and several of my fellow Hokies actually were pulling for the Hoo's in the College World Series. Personally, I don't know any Hoo's who would have had the class to pull for their fellow in-state team.

Great debates here, lots of poking and proding by both sides. But, in the end, the Hokies are the choice of the area fans. Also, if you cannot pull against your rival, who can you pull against ?? Since getting into the ACC, the Hokies are on the move UP, and the other ACC members are realizing their worst nightmares are coming true ( now we know why they kept us out for 50+ years !!! ).

Ah yes Dan, I was not speaking of the individual athlete sending money back to the school (and you know that) I was speaking to the issue that UVA does not have the Alumni support from its' general population compared to Tech. I will admit I do not know how much Tech's Alumni that is in pro sports has given back to the school, but I do know that my parking space for tech games seems to get smaller every year. There both good schools, but TEch has more fan and Alumni support. Amen

This is the only place on the internet where UVa and VA Tech fans can argue uncensored without being booted, edited, or banned! That's why I post on every http://www.roanoke.com sports blog or sports comment area!

I think this is a great debate and will agree that VT fans are passionate about football, but if we are debating who(hoo) has the best sports program over all, then just google the Director's cup standings, which gives points for top finishes in each NCAA sport. Virginia has won several national championships over the years in all sports and will finish inside the Top 10 in the Director's Cup with big time schools like Texas, Florida and Michigan. Tech ranked #45th.

Golfman,
Not sure where you are getting your facts on fan and alumni support. Look at the endowments of each school, and the number of students at each institution. VPI has an endowment of about $528 million and 31,000 students (undergraduate and graduate). That comes out to about $17,000 per student. UVa has about 29,000 total students, with an endowment of about $4 BILLION. That comes out to about $139,000 per student, the largest for a public institution in the nation. When you are talking alumni support, UVa clearly wins that one.
