Golfman,

Not sure where you are getting your facts on fan and alumni support. Look at the endowments of each school, and the number of students at each institution. VPI has an endowment of about $528 million and 31,000 students (undergraduate and graduate). That comes out to about $17,000 per student. UVa has about 29,000 total students, with an endowment of about $4 BILLION. That comes out to about $139,000 per student, the largest for a public institution in the nation. When you are talking alumni support, UVa clearly wins that one.

I think this is a great debate and will agree that VT fans are passionate about football, but if we are debating who(hoo) has the best sports program over all, then just google the Director's cup standings, which gives points for top finishes in each NCAA sport. Virginia has won several national championships over the years in all sports and will finish inside the Top 10 in the Director's Cup with big time schools like Texas, Florida and Michigan. Tech ranked #45th.

This is the only place on the internet where UVa and VA Tech fans can argue uncensored without being booted, edited, or banned! That's why I post on every www.roanoke.com sports blog or sports comment area! :)

Ah yes Dan, I was not speaking of the individual athlete sending money back to the school (and you know that) I was speaking to the issue that UVA does not have the Alumni support from its' general population compared to Tech. I will admit I do not know how much Tech's Alumni that is in pro sports has given back to the school, but I do know that my parking space for tech games seems to get smaller every year. There both good schools, but TEch has more fan and Alumni support. Amen

Great debates here, lots of poking and proding by both sides. But, in the end, the Hokies are the choice of the area fans. Also, if you cannot pull against your rival, who can you pull against ?? Since getting into the ACC, the Hokies are on the move UP, and the other ACC members are realizing their worst nightmares are coming true ( now we know why they kept us out for 50+ years !!! ).

Big difference between Hoo fans and Hokie fans. I and several of my fellow Hokies actually were pulling for the Hoo's in the College World Series. Personally, I don't know any Hoo's who would have had the class to pull for their fellow in-state team.

I enjoy the jabs between Tech and Hoo fans here. But I really enjoy telling coworkers who are big Tech fans that my University actually won a national title in football, and was the other Virginia school to get to the World Series for college baseball back in 1983.
GO Dukes of JMU!

i would just like to say congratulations to the UVA baseball team, it was quite a ride. I really started getting into it deep in the acc tourney and by the time they got to Omaha I felt like i was living and dying with each pitch. There was plenty of oppurtunities to win that last game and i am not one to blame the umps or refs whichever it may be, but I felt Danny Hultzen should have drawn a walk off walk, the pitch wasn't close. Lookout for them next year

Hey Golfman2. The Barbers and Chris Long gave back to the football team, and Ryan Zimmerman gave $250,000 to the baseball team. What Hokie can you say did that for their team?? UVA doesn't have to advertise to get it's family to come home (And give money), it seems Tech does!
Amen!! and Amen!!
