UVa basketball commitment #5

Akil Mitchell, a 6-foot-7, 205-pound small forward from Charlotte (N.C.) Christian School, has made a basketball commitment to Virginia for 2010.

Mitchell was considering mostly Ivy League schools and other low- to mid-major programs until he attended UVa's elite camp this summer.

Tech can't take Duke lightly, Beamer says

Virginia Tech football odds and ends:

-- Tech coach Frank Beamer talked Monday about the Hokies' first ACC road game, a noon contest at Duke (0-0, 2-2).

The Hokies (1-0, 3-1) can ill afford to take the Blue Devils lightly, Beamer said. Tech has been established as early 16.5-point favorite in its quest to whip Duke for a ninth consecutive time.

Oct. 10 Game times set for Tech, UVa

The ACC announced Monday that the Oct. 10 football game between Virginia Tech and Boston College at Lane Stadium will kick off at noon and be broadcast on Raycom, which will be shown locally on WDBJ-TV.

The ACC also announced that Virginia's home game with Indiana that day will begin at 3:30 p.m. and be seen on ESPN360.com.

Hokies jump to No. 6 in AP poll

Bolstered by it 31-7 romp over then-No. 9 Miami on Saturday, Virginia Tech jumped from 11th to sixth in the new Associated Press Top 25 college football rankings released an hour ago.

The Hokies hopped four teams that lost last week -- Mississippi, California, Penn State, plus Miami -- and also leapfrogged Oklahoma, which was idle last week.

Florida, Texas, Alabama, LSU and Boise State are the top five, with Tech, USC, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Cincinnati rounding out the top 10.

Tech (3-1) is ranked highest among the teams that have lost one game.

Miami fell to No. 17 in the new rankings. Georgia Tech is the only other ACC team in the poll at 25th.

Postgame analysis

BLACKSBURG – A steady rain, when accompanied by a loss, would have made for a miserable afternoon Saturday at Lane Stadium.

“I’d do it again,” one Virginia Tech fan told a buddy as they headed to the parking lot, and the feeling was universal.

Unless you were a Hurricane.

Convincing

Eleventh-ranked Virginia Tech, a two-point underdog, has defeated ninth-ranked Miami 31-7 at Lane Stadium.

Medium to heavy rain fell from start to finish but most of the fans remained in their seats.

Hokies go up 31-7

An interception and 28-yard return by Tech junior cornerback Rashad Carmichael set up a 25-yard drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Ryan Williams that put the Hokies ahead 31-7 with 12:16 remaining.

Miami sophomore quarterback Jacory Harris never took his eyes off of intended receiver Laron Byrd and Carmichael made the Hurricanes pay for it. Rain-drenched fans are heading for the exits and who can blame them?

Stats at the end of the third quarter showed Tech with a 321-148 margin in total offense. Unofficially, Williams now has 32 carries for 137 yards and two TDs.

It was announced at the end of the third quarter that safety Davon Morgan will not return as the result of a shoulder injury. Offensive tackle Blake DeChristopher, helped from the field in the first half with an apparent knee or ankle problem, has returned.

Tech leads 24-7 after three quarters

Hokies face 3rd-and-11 from their 15 to start the fourth period.

Big turnaround

Two passes dropped by ex-basketball player Jimmy Graham in the span of three plays took all the momentum away from the Hurricanes, who were subsequently victimized on a 44-yard run by Tech freshman Ryan Williams to the Miami 20.

Matt Waldron's 23-yard field goal with 3:49 left in the third quarter puts the Hokies ahead 24-10.

Harris, a fifth-year senior in his first year of college football, had caught one pass in Miami's first two games.
