LB Gibson to get first college start at East Carolina

BLACKSBURG -- After watching his defense being stung for 490 rushing yards in consecutive losses to Georgia Tech and North Carolina, Virginia Tech coordinator Bud Foster has decided to stir the pot a bit.

Following the Hokies' practice Saturday, Foster said redshirt freshman Lyndell Gibson will start at inside linebacker when Tech travels to East Carolina on Thursday.

Postgame thoughts on Virginia Tech-North Carolina

POSTGAME: Ryan Williams was clearly devastated after this one, but there was much more to this 20-17 loss to North Carolina than just his fumble. Missed opportunities by the offense, too many third- (and fourth-) down conversions by UNC and a general lack of execution when it mattered doomed the Hokies. If you're itching for details, simply scroll down to the in-game posts. Read more »

UVa Insider, The Column

Even with a defensive stop early in the fourth quarter Saturday, Virginia probably was not going to beat Georgia Tech.

The Cavaliers trailed 20-9 and would have needed a touchdown, a two-point conversion and a field goal to send the game into overtime, provided they also had made a couple more defensive stops.

Given UVa’s inability to score touchdowns against ACC opposition, that wasn’t going to happen, but an unnecessary roughness penalty against Ras-I Dowling took away any Cavalier hopes and drove up the final score in a game they would lose 34-9. Read more »

Hokies' Coastal hopes grow even dimmer

BLACKSBURG -- While Virginia Tech's football team conducted game-week preparations Saturday for Thursday's ACC contest with North Carolina at Lane Stadium, the Hokies didn't get any help in their bid to win a third straight league crown.

Georgia Tech's 34-9 victory at Virginia on Saturday puts the Yellow Jackets (7-1, 5-1 ACC) solely in the driver's seat for the Coastal Division title. The Ramblin Wreck can sew up the crown with wins over Wake Forest at home (Nov. 7) and at Duke (Nov. 14).

UVa post-game analysis

For Virginia’s football team to get to a level that would save coach Al Groh’s job, the Cavaliers probably needed to beat visiting Georgia Tech on Saturday.

Of course, anything could happen. We learned that when the Cavaliers rallied from an 0-3 start to win three games in a row, but this team has problems that it hasn’t come close to resolving.

Final in-game blog

They told the fans that there was severe weather in the area but it isn't doing anything.

Georgia Tech has gone ahead 34-9 with 3:04 remaining. UVa's defense has been on the field all day.

That 13-6 game at halftime seems like a lifetime ago.

Virginia now has scored one offensive touchdown in two weeks and that came on a 2-yard drive.
