Hokies get bitten again in Atlanta
ATLANTA -- OK, checking in here during the wee hours of a Sunday morning for the second time in seven weeks. The smoke-filled writing room once again is stationed at the lovely Extended Stay America.
Unlike following Virginia Tech's season-opening loss to Alabama on Sept. 5 at the Georgia Dome, I have cold adult beverages in hand this time. So I finished 1-1 in Georgia's capital city. The Hokies only wish they could have earned such a split.
The Hokies' defense, the longtime given in Frank Beamer's program, couldn't deliver the goods Saturday night at Bobby Dodd Stadium in a 28-23 loss to Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets' tricky option running game snookered both coordinator Bud Foster and his troops in a second-half stampede that sparked the Jackets' first win over a top-five team at Dodd in 47 years.
Buoyed by Johnson's changes in his offense's blocking schemes, the Ramblin' Wreck rumbled for 272 yards in the second half after being stymied for 37 yards on 21 rushing attempts in the first 30 minutes.
Afterwards, the Hokies could only give it up to Johnson for one-upping their longtime defensive guru. The rushing avalanche in the second half allowed the hosts to hold the ball for 22:38 of the second half.
Tech's defense, dead tired from being on the field so long, had no counter moves to keep Johnson's offense from running wild.
"Defensively, we just had a hard time getting them stopped," said Tech coach Frank Beamer, who are 0-2 in Atlanta and 5-0 everywhere else this season. "People changing who they blocked ... they know what they're doing. We were good for a while, but then we sorta got into a guessing game."
The Hokies guessed wrong at every turn. The hosts scored touchdowns on three of their six second-half possessions, including the final one in which they lined up in the "victory formation" as they melted the final seconds after recovering an onside kick.
"Offensively, we were our own worst enemy in the first half," said Johnson, whose team managed only 88 total yards in the first half but still led 7-3 at intermission.
"They lined up differently than they played last year and we acted like we had never seen that defense. Once we got settled down at halftime and understood where everyone was supposed to go, we executed better in the second half.
"We missed a few reads on the option in the first half. What happened was [Virginia Tech's defense] played totally opposite of how they played us last year. They played exactly the same way in the second half the whole game on defense. We got the reads right and everyone went in the right direction.
"Last year, they lined up in an eight-man front the whole game. but this year they lined up in a 4-3 or a 6-1. They rolled a safety down into the boundary. In the second half, we executed better, we realized where they wre and went to the right numbers.
"In the first half, we were running where they had players, right into the teeth of their unit. In the second half, we did a good job of adjusting. Made a couple little tweaks at halftime and Josh [Nesbitt, quarterback] did a nice job of running the offense in the second half."
Tech's defense simply couldn't stop Georgia Tech's running game. The Jackets finished with 309 ground yards, marking the fifth time in seven games this season they've eclipsed the 300 mark. Georgia Tech converted six of eight third-down situations in the second half. They scored three TDs on four trips inside the Hokies' 20-yard line. Entering the game, Foster's crowd had allowed only six TDs on 22 trips inside the red zone.
"They got us in some tough situations and we couldn't stop them," Hokies linebacker Cody Grimm said. "We knew they were going to hold the ball and we knew we had to get them off the field. We couldn't do it."
The loss was a serious blow for the Hokies, who became the latest top-five team to lose in six of the season's first seven weeks. The Hokies are now toast in a season in which they hoped they could somehow wind up in sneaking in the backdoor to the BCS title game on Jan. 7.
All's left now is trying to win a third straight ACC title, which would guarantee another BCS bowl trip.
"Hopefully, we win out and see what happens," Grimm said.
"Yeah, pretty much," said linebacker Barquell Rivers, when asked if he's glad he and the defense won't face another offense like Georgia Tech's the rest of the season.
Foster, no doubt, must feel the same way this morning.

i thought that the hokies laid down and quit last night. This was coach Beamers fault. We got the talent to win the national championship. With Beamer as coach we will be what we always have been a good ACC team. Nothing more. We need to change in order to move on to a higher level.
Comment by jeffrey marden — October 18, 2009 @ 7:54 am
Just think that if we had a Hokie offense, the onus wouldn't have to always be on the defense to save the day. Our offense gets the ball inside GT territory three times in the first half, and we score 3 total points?

After watching last night's game,my stomach hurt. I can only imagine how the Hokies feel. It seems like all of our dreams are over.
However, I like what Coach Beammer said-"There is a lot of football to be played, let's just keep this thing going"
I personally was looking at the schedule and the quality of teams that Tech has played so far-there have been so many "big games" for the Hokies this season already that you would think that we are near the end. As a matter of fact, it is only the middle of the season. There are five games to be played in which a lot can happen. Tech lost four(?) ACC games last year-won the "Hokie Invitational", aka the ACC Championship game and went on to defeat the Bearcats in the Orange bowl. Maintain your enthusiasm. Thursday after next can't get here fast enough!

the only wreak that tech had has been going on years. its called the steinspring offense . beamer, it is good to be honestand trusting man and standing behind your people , but it just continues, no offense. you have someone who is a freind and that can be understood but it is the program that is suffering . football is job of perfornance do not do your job and you are replaced frend or not happends all the time just look around. FOR GOOD OF HOKIE FOOTBALL CHANGES NEED TO BE MADE. and steinspring for the good of the program you know what you must do

Well the hokies once again snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. An immensely talented team underacheives and losses a game they shouldn't. Is it coaching? player's not getting it or a combination. As one of over 60,000 fans who bleed orange and maroon for them every home game and die for them every year when they come up short, I just wanted them to know how we feel. They don't understand that it's the best it's going to be right now and they had an opportunity that anyone of us would have given our right arm to have had, but they blew it away. It will never come again and all you had to do was take a short time out of your life with the God-given talents you have and not try but do the best that is in you. You will live with the "what ifs" for the rest of your lives. So finish your season, go to some meanless bowel game as an "award"., and enjoy being young and underacheiving, it's all down hill from here.

Holding GaTech to 28 points is not so bad. You know they are going to score. Where Beamer needs to adjust is in his offensive philosophy. Look how many point Fla State scored. How? By opening up the game and utilizing the talent that is there. Beamer needs to look at Syracuse offense under Donovan McNabb and implement more roll out options for Tyrod. Make it part of the offense from the first snap, not just when we are in emergency mode...

118 years of football and not one national title! Why do I get heartbroken so much I don't know but I do! If it's the offense one half then it's the defense the second half that loses the games! GT has not even have an ounce of talent level compareable to tech! I hate seeing vt choke every year at the hint of bcs title contender! But that's what they do choke! I still love them the same but it is so disheartening the way they handle pressure! If foster's recruiting has taken a dive which this year looks like it then just watch how tech falls back into such a mediocre team! I believe this is techs plateauing and a return to lower tier status is underway. Maybe it's for the better bc then there will be no expectation. I'll still love tech the same, but at least i won't be pretending to think tech might one day when the big game, and no it's not the acc title game. That's about as worthless as a title game there is right now...the defense away from home is the worst I've seen in 10 years!
Comment by Louisianahokie — October 18, 2009 @ 10:41 am
and now UVA controls the coastal division!!!what a joke!! tech needs to replace stiney! 8 years is long enough to keep wasting NFL talent! A champioship team which tech isn't will never be with an offensive coach who calls 4 bad games a year!!! And if all Beamer wants to do is win 10 games a year and the acc every year then please retire and give bud the keys to the team!!!10 wins a year against the likes of duke, Maryland, UVA, unc, marshall, isn't really legit anyways! Just padding the stats!

Johnson's offense is not magic. I played in it and defensed it 55 years ago. It's not mystical, magical or unstoppable. Foster needs to talk to a coach from the 50's. There's a reason only GT is running that offense and no one else, it's stoppable. Run a five four defensive alignment, engage the center on every play, stay in your lanes and hit the QB every play. About the middle of the 2nd qtr all he wants to do is fight & get rid of the ball. Trust me, it works. The players are right though, 4 times in GT territory in the first half & only 3 pts. Convert those chances & we wouldn't be having this conversation. 14-17 pts. in the first half & all GT would have to talk about was their comeback that came up short. We'll find out how much character this team has the rest of the season. We just don't handle success very well.

Well Well Well. Glad to see the typical cry babies have showed up for such a classy institution. For a school that has never one a national championship in any sport you guys sure do have some high expectations.
Once again, VT loses and no credit is given to the opponent. GT is 6-1 for a reason. That was a hard fought game last night and VTs offense played great in the second half when they had the ball. You can't blame the offense when they weren't even on the field. Sure if you score a couple of TDs in the first half that would have helped but look at the GT FSU game and you'll see it takes more than a couple of touchdowns to get GT out of sync.
GT had the ball for all but 8 minutes of the second half and the 8 minutes VT had the ball they scored 3 touchdowns. You guys really need to check your facts before posting your angry comments.
Comment by Original Greg — October 18, 2009 @ 12:34 pm
Please stop blaming the team , the players gave it all, and did what the coaches prepared them to do. and from an offensive standpoint, that is the problem, the offensive coaching is bad and except for a blip or two ( maybe Stiney had the flu and was not at the BC game, ha ,ha ) will continue to be bad unless we get a new philosophy and new offensive coordinator and new quarterback coach !!!!!!!!

OH and P.S. This super talented VT bunch is not really all that talented. They are good but not great. You are one lucky play away from losing to Nebraska and got some real favorable weather against Miami. This team could easily be sitting on 4 losses right now.

Question: Who is the best 2 loss team in the land?
Answer: Who cares.
Welcome back to earth Hokie fans. I hope you enjoyed your brief journey to the top 5.
Comment by Joe — October 18, 2009 @ 12:46 pm
What a bunch of fair weather fans we have. When things are going well, you say WE did this and WE were great. The Hokies play a good team and lose and you play the blame game. GROW UP!! Lose a game and you give up on your own team. They need your support now more than ever. If you can't do that, go root for Miami, you'll fit in with them.

GT is not a good team!! There d gave up 1000 yards in the two previous games!! Plus 300 in the 2nd half! That's why we are mad! Bama is a good team and that's why that loss was respectable but gt! come on and yeah Nebraska might be a good team but we got lucky for once in that game! gt is a joke and they can have their 6-1 record bc eventually their 50s style will be a wreck like it was against lsu in their bowl game last yr and quality teams like Miami this year! Shoot maybe UVA might expose gt next week! wouldn't that make vt's coaches feel even greater! VT's talent is mind boggling considering the offensive production the past 6 years! the years of our d winning everything for us are over and that's unfortunate! maybe next year we can start out unranked and actually earn everything we get bc that's when tech is at it's best or at least losses against inferior teams won't hurt as much with nothing really to lose!!
Comment by Louisianahokie — October 18, 2009 @ 3:28 pm
fair weather?! I'll love tech whether 1-10 or 10-1, but when you have a team with talent to compete and lead thru 3 quarters against a bama this yr, and then lose to avg at best gt, it's heartbreaking! Unfortunately, cfb is not bball! you have to take the pressure of everyone taking their best shot each week and the good teams win all the games they are suppose to even if they are close!

actually all of hokienation should be rooting for the boos this week against that vaunted gt club that just beat vt!!!! I know I will be bc I just want an orange bowl hokie appearance against a "good" team this year to set us up for next year!! That is assuming we win! actually any victory in any bowl game will do this year!
Comment by Louisianahokie — October 18, 2009 @ 5:59 pm
Louisianahokie where is all this talent you talk about? You have an average QB who would be less than average if he couldn't run. You have several top quality running backs with a weak offensive line. And your receivers had how many touchdown catches last year? Oh and don't say you lost all the talent to the NFL because they aren't there either. You did get one thing right in your last post though. The good teams win the games they are supposed to win. Guess that answers the question about whether or not VT is a good team.

What"s a boohoo? Is it what a Hokie does after loosing a game? Come on you cry babies there is still a lot of football to be played. VT has a good football team ( just not a #4 rank ) and looks like UVA is finding their game as well. Everyone needs to cheer for both of these programs located in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Beamer cannot handle pressure. Please Beamer, retire and take Stiney with you. You have gotten us this far, but with all due respect, you cannot take us any further. I do not recall Tech making a 2-point conversion or recover an onside kick or make proper adjustments during the second half. We are under-coached. I am angry.
Comment by Moe — October 19, 2009 @ 1:21 am
original greg, actually everyone of tech's freshmen rb and soph receivers are studs who are future stars, most are now..roberts in particular...the freshmen hosley looks great too on defense...there were lots of kids in particular on defense who were suppose to be studs...chancellor has been a disappointment at free safety the past 2 yrs, and he should have stayed at strong, the other dbs are capable of stopping julio jones in his tracks one week, but then getting burnt against duke the next week, but talent they have...i admit that the lbs have been a huge disappointment outside of lane...they are young blah blah but adibi and hall were superstars when they were freshmen...i hear tech has some great young lbs on the bench, bruce taylor for one, who should be playing but i dont know why...maybe the schemes are too tough to learn but they just arent working against avg teams outside of lane....tech should never wear maroon on the road again!!the coaching away from lane has been the biggest let down this year!!!vt had the talent(miami-bc blasting) and luck(nebraska-duke game) to be a number 4 team this yr and usually has a defense to be a number 1 team but like i said, coaching on away games has squandered another year where greatness could have been achieved...tyrod is an avg college qb, but he too is as talented of a runner as there is...has to be...the oline is and will always be inconsistent at tech, thats just how it is, but with the right coaching, tech could still find a way to be a great team like they were in 99...its called adjustments...pls win out hokies!!!

One thing the Hokie players can depend on, the stadium will be full the next game. At UVA they've been 15-20,000 below capacity every home game including their homecoming. We have a right to complain when things go bad. We were there unlike HOOS fans who can't leave the party long enough to support their team. If UVA would put all the tickets to the VT, UVA game on sale there would be more TECH fans in Scott stadium than Hoos fans. Probably will be anyway.
Comment by Lester — October 19, 2009 @ 1:54 am
Here we go again. Tech gets near thwe RED ZONE and we run on every play. You know that the other team is going to stuff our running game, like the Duke game. What's wrong with passing 30 times in a game. Plenty of successful teams do it. I can remember when we had a passing game. Dan Henning(sp.) was the offensive coordinator for one year. Bob German was the starting QB. He assessed the situation and used the second string QB and developed a pass offense that got national recognition. The QB was Don Strock. He was the leading total yardage leader in the country. Stiney you must go. We need a strong passing attach so when other teams want to stuff the line of scrimmage, we switch to a passing attack. I do not know what goes on at half time, but it seems that other teams make adjustments and we do the same old thing, run the ball in critical situations.
Comment by Dick Culpepper — October 19, 2009 @ 7:59 am
GT goes in at halftime and makes offensive adjustments and comes out looking good.
Hokies go in at halftime and say, "We're going to make some offensive adjustments. Instead of running up the middle all the time we're going to run up the middle al the time. Let's go!"
Thus we see the difference in the ability of coaches to make the PROPER adjustments at halftime in order to win a game.
Comment by Phil — October 19, 2009 @ 9:38 am
Virginia Tech is, in fact, a better team than Georgia Tech but that doesn't always determine the winner. Georgia Tech is a better team than Virginia but might suffer the same consequences as Virginia Tech did last Saturday. It's possible, regardless of the probability.
Comment by Wampum — October 19, 2009 @ 11:10 am
It was interesting to watch the game from a different perspective this past week now that I live in Atlanta. This game was a simple mirror image of the Nebraska game. Tech won the one it should have lost and lost the one it should have won. In both cases you had a team dominate everywhere but the scoreboard. When teams are not separated by that much, you simply can not do that. Nebraska paid for it against Tech and the Hokies paid for it against GT. Let a good team (or even just an above average team) hang around long enough and they will start believing they can win.
Two other observations:
1. What was the deal with the ref moving the ball on what should have been 4th down?
2. Quit blaming the coordinator and execute the offense you have.
Comment by Atlanta Hoo — October 19, 2009 @ 11:33 am
Man...you guys are being awfully tough on Stinespring. Seems to me like Coach Foster is who lost this game for us. Even Paul Johnson said in an interview that we didn't make adjustments. We played basically the same defensive scheme the whole game. Was Foster sick? I don't know but it just seemed like something was missing from our defense. It seemed like our guys were playing hard there were just gaping holes. As far as I'm concerned those holes are more a matter of scheming than playing hard. I say old Bud just had a really bad game. GT came out in the second half with a new scheme and Bud just couldn't come up with something to counter it. Yeah our offense didn't score on 3 drives, but GT scored on nearly every one of theirs. AND nearly every one of their drives in the second half SUSTAINED drives. WE COULDN'T STOP THEIR OFFENSE. I'm not the biggest fan of Stiney either, but I wouldn;t put this game on him. This game is on Bud. Sorry.
Comment by Chad — October 19, 2009 @ 12:47 pm
I don't think UVA is relevant to the discussion of the Hokies. Eyes on the prize -- it was a tough game outcome-wise, and GTech looked like the spread option had one of its best nights against one of the best teams in the country. Getting over the top is the goal, no doubt, but as they say in golf: "never up, never in." Virginia Tech being at No. 4 was no fluke, and I think we'll be seeing them in that vicinity a few more times to come before it's all said and done. Good team, good coaches, good recruiting, and the best game atmosphere I've seen -- AND I'M A DIEHARD WAHOO.
That said, and although everyone that would predict we'll lose to Georgia Tech on Saturday would be making good sense, the fact is we do run a different defense than the rest (or at least most) of the ACC, and it seems to be a style of defense that is effective against the offense GPI runs. With an even better defense last year than this year's, and playing at home to boot, GPI lost to us 24-17. They ran the ball alot, as expected, but only gained 156 yards on 41 carries. That's not awful, but considering they only went for 103 yards passing (and one INT), GPI really wasn't very effective that day. Maybe it was personnel, luck, a bad day by GPI's offense or us playing better than our talent level, but the fact is, we won, and we've generally had a decent shot against GPI every year. So if, and it's a HUGE "IF", UVA gets past Georgia Tech, I hope folks won't say it has anything to do with the Hokies, etc. VPI is the class of the ACC, and I do think that's saying something even if Hokies fans don't think so at the moment, and there's really no argument about that.
But slappying the Wahoos around for just trying to crawl out of this dungeon of a season? That looks small to me. Chin up and get 'em next week.
Comment by theo '85 — October 19, 2009 @ 12:55 pm
The Hokies will never have a team who can sustain top 5 rankings util we overhaul our offense. We are trying to run an old-fashioned offense that served us well in the 1980's, but the college football world has passed us by. Our offense is stale, has no imigination, and is totally ineffective. I don't believe that our offensive coordidnator ever heard of rolling out our quarterback for passing situations. Pitiful!! The only reason we are scoring any points is because we have many talented athletes! Just think what they could do if they had any offensive direction!!
Comment by Hal Burleson — October 19, 2009 @ 1:25 pm
I would chalk this loss up to coaching. I would like to see the VT Coaches step up and say that this one is on them. When you know a team is going to run it 97% of the time, and you don't put your players in position to stop it, that's on the coaches. GT executed flawlessly in the 2nd half and the Hokies had no answer. One thing about Groh for all his flaws, he is a pretty good X's and O's guy. I expect that he will put the UVA defense in a position to be at bit more competitive on Saturday than Tech's was in the 2nd half. Now if he could just figure out W&M.
Comment by Lawhoo — October 19, 2009 @ 4:16 pm
Do Hokies not look at the statistics? Offense did not cause the loss to GT. This loss rests squarely on the lack of a good defensive game plan to defend the option. The VT defense was not on the field the entire game because of poor VT offensive play. They were on the field the entire game because they gave up 5 plus yards on every play. If you are going to complain at least identify the true source of your problem.

I think it is important that we put perspective into the conversation. Ancient chinese philosopher once said " ching pow dong woo" loosly translated this means "whose your Daddy." This was a defining moment in Virginia Tech history that has been replayed numerous times since 2000. If the ACC is not careful, It will be moving in the direction of the WAC and the ACC. Tech could find itself being invited to play on Tuesday and Wednesday nights on ESPN. Tech had very little credability after Alabama with the talking heads are going to have to see something "BIG" in order to see otherwise. Tech should not have ever thought about scheduling Boise State for the opener next year, If you win, well you should have won, if you loose, well now we know. Tech shouldn't start the season with a season determining game. Just beat the sh-- out of everyone you play, even if it is VMI.

They were falling all over themselves to tell everyone that they could find how great of fans VT had, How welcomed they felt in Blacksburg, and how they couldn't wait to play us again because of the class of fans that we had. Where did you/do you go to school? Why the grudge? Did a blacksburg woman break your heart? Or did VT just beat your team one too many times?

Tony the only reason you are not excited about rowing season is that Tech sucks at it. In fact, you guys are horrible at everything. Well at least according to the NCAA.

The GT/VT game was one hell of a game.
1)VT's offense failed to take advantage of opportunities to score in the first half.
2)VT's defense got tired in the 2nd half.
Get ahead by a few points early, and GT CANNOT chew clock. They have to start 'going for it.' The spread is great for 4 - 7 yard runs on a consistent basis.
Stinespring is doing better this year..He HAS improved. We have went from a sub 100th ranked offense to a better than 50th ranked offense. That is real improvement. He needs to rethink the redzone strategy against tough opponents. If he can get that going, we become a top 20 offense. On the basis of what I have seen, he gets another year.
Bud is having an off year. He can't run the plays for the guys. Some of our guys are not up to our usual defensive standards. Some are better. I have faith that Bud will improve this defense this year and show continued improvement next.
Mr. Marden - You are insane. VT 'laid down and quit'???? I saw a team score 3 touchdowns with 8 mins of possession!!!! Beamer needs to go??? Beamer has brought VT to a NC and we have been very close a few times since.
We are 17 points from being #2 in the country and slated for a berth in a NC game against Florida. - at this point
We are 6 points from being on top of the ACC. - at this point.
That, my friend, is pretty dadgum close.
If GT falters at either Duke or Wake, and we take care of business, VT is in the ACCCG again.
I want VT to win a NC too. Remember, before Beamer, there was not even a reason to have a case to hold the NC trophy. We will get there.
