Notes from Iraq

Math (for Jule Drewry, a Roanoke City teacher)

Julie Drewry, a Roanoke City math teacher, recently wrote me asking "Can you include how you use math in your work or how your company uses math so that I can share it with the students of Roanoke City?" The following is my response:

Math is all around is in everything that we do. The Army is very time focused, especially with backwards planning. Artillery requires a series of calculations in order to place rounds on target with the proper trajectory. One of my primary jobs is overseeing reconstruction projects in Baghdad. US forces control a pot of money with which the Iraqis plan projects and build infrastructure. The Iraqis know that they get the money, and I have to be on my game with this job. It is actually the Iraqis own money that we took control of after the fall of Sadaam.
