Notes from Iraq

16DEC08--Just a few pictures

A few pictures from today.

The Iraqi Soldiers show me how they make bread. You flatten the dough like a pan cake and stick it to the side of the oven. Then you scrape it off when it is cooked. Looks like a pita.

The chow hall for the Iraqi Soldiers. A vast improvement from a few months ago.

Mounted on this HMMWV is the machine gun that was cleaned with diesel yesterday. The Iraqis found it weeks before buried with other weapons.

  1. Rich,
I see the Hesco's in the background. Have any enterprising lads found that you can garden in them? We had cukes and melons both. It still makes me smile. Mike

  2. Ahhh...the bread. I love that bread. There's a local Persian food chain called "Moby Dick". They serve some great kebab from the grill: Kebab Kubideh, Joojeh, Chenjeh... Delicious.

And the best part, it always comes with the bread.. And some must-o-khiar (I think that's right...delicious yogurt dip with cucumber and mint). They have ovens very similar to pictured here. Roll out the dough, put it on a pillow-looking pad, and slap it to the side of the oven. Good stuff!

  3. Are the Iraqis drinking some form of Pepsi in those cans?

  4. Mike, the Iraqis are trying to transplant palm trees in some of them.

Renee, the Iraqis are constantly trying to hand me chi (tea) or these cans of cola to drink. I repeatedly decline, but sometimes I feel obligated to drink the tea. It is not bad tea, I just do no like tea much. I have never tried the cola, but I know that it is similar to Pepsi. It is called Tay-yab, which means delicious.

  5. "It is called Tay-yab"

haha We should send you a can of "Tab" for them. I'm not sure what it means, but it is definitely *not* delicious!

  6. LOL, Palm trees like their feet wet, so they will need to water the heck out of them.
