Notes from Iraq

18DEC08--SOI Payday, Day Two

Today, we visited another Iraqi base to oversee SOI payday.

The SOI program was such a great idea at first.  Not only did guys get jobs, but the area became more secure.  However, one downside is that it is easy money.  Why work when you can get paid to hang out with buddies at a checkpoint?

At least the area is secure and things are peaceful.  The grass is always greener...

However, when a child poses as an adult to get SOI pay, well, there is just very little good to be said about that.  I cannot even speculate whether his father was killed, so the kid is standing in.  Perhaps the kid was higher outright.  Perhaps his father is at work, effectively earning two checks.  No idea.

Still, I am thankful that I was born and grew up where I did.  And that my kids will do the same.

SOIs stand in line to verify that they have all the proper documentation.

One of these SOI are not like the others.

Believe it or not, all of this "17 year-old man's" papework appeared to be in order...at first glance.

  1. Could this possibly be the 'Beta Test' for the new system of 'make work' promised by BHO? The latest news reports announce three million 'new' jobs. The 'National Security Force', equal in power and funding to the US military, was promised in BHO's Denver speach, spring of 2007. (You Tube)Would this mean thousands of 'security checkpoints' and 'inspection' stations all across the USA? SOUSA? SOI style?

  2. Geezer,

I should like to think that talk of such a system in the States is mere Chicken Little chatter. At least, I would like to think so.
